Egging it up the last hill (big) on the way home from work - Start hearing a clicking sound and I think weird.. however keep pedaling becuase I really want to get up this hill.. then a clonk.. i was like "hmmm somethings gonna break any second" .. then boom the chain breaks :( .. damnit..

This seems fairly safe other than nearly going over the bars due to standing up..

Anyone got any horror stories to share regarding broken chains?

also - whats those connector things called? I thought they were chain links but CRC dont seem to have anything like that, and the ones I did find are for SRAM or this

Which is also sold out in 9spd.. I have shimano gumph or does that not matter?

and the small walk home was COLD!

wouldnt it be worth buying a new chain? if one link has f'd up aren't the rest likely to break too?

  • No, that's why they're called 'weak links' the weak ones break. The rest will be fine.*

*I am not responsible if you do face palm the road next time you use that chain, only I've fixed several chains and they're still fine
It takes as much courage to have tried and failed as it does to have tried and succeeded.

I've snapped a chain a few times. The only one that was more than annoying was in a quarry and I couldn't be bothered to change down to go up a short, sharp hill. Halfway up, second pump (as it were) and it went. I carried on... Cracked a rib on the stem.
  • i snapped my chain at the bottom of a hill pedaling away from stationary traffic into a side road. thankfully i had chosen to aim for the pavement when i was setting off, so when i launched i went onto the pavement and the bike went into the road.

bike didnt get hit but bent the mech hanger baaad, dragged it outta the way of the cars and fixed it by the side of the road :D

didnt get any more injured than a scuffed hand and knee.

treated myself to a new 991 chain, after i found another link was bending on the 951, and havent had a problem since :D
  • whats this 991 chain business about.. Are there different stregnths? epic fail tho Tartanyak.. lol

I have the chain here and I checked it over, its appears the side bit has bent which is a but I guess these things happen..

I would buy a new chain but ive only just had this one fitted.. about 2 months ago!

Go for a cheaper model - my favourites are cheap KMC's. (Who make Shimano and Sram chains anyway). On Ebay for under £10 posted.
The more expensive chains are made lighter and tend to be weaker.
Good if you are looking to save grammes, otherwise save money. And nuts from hitting the stem.

  • I havn't had any chains snap luckily, but I have had a cleat rip out of a pair of really cheap SPD shoes I had. Caused the same thing to happen as you, but different causes.
