Urgent sizing advice - Whyte 901 / 905

Hi chaps. I'll be honest and upfront here - I'm a roadie at heart, but looking for a quality hardtail for the odd weekend off road, and for winter training.
I love the look of the Whyte 901 and have seen a couple going up for sale. Trouble is, they are all medium sized, and I cannot work out what will fit. A kind neighbour let me sit on his 905 (size large), but I am not experienced enough to know if this felt right or not. It seemed quite large to me on first impression.
So, my question is to any of you owners out there - what height / inside leg are you and what size do you ride? I am 6'1" but only a 32" inside leg. If it helps, I ride a 56cm Cervelo road bike. Does the fact thet Whyte only make small, medium and large mean that the medium is actually like a specialized large, and the Whyte large like a specialized XL??
Hope that's not all too vague. I know in the ideal world you should go out and test ride, but I am not too experienced on an mtb anyway. Anyone out there able to help?

Not an expert on all bikes but I am 6'1" and have long legs 36" inside. I got a size M Whyte 901 after trying out a 905 m in the shop. (2011 version) . I think size is partly preference and riding style but on an MTB preference seems to be to get away with the smallest possible as the bigger it is the harder it is to manouvre.
I have ridden it a few miles now and am very happy with the size. If I was only interested in cross country I could probably ride a large but I want to mess around on it as well, hit jumps and bits of downhill. I think that M was the best choice for me on flat 15mile rides it is comfy and I dont feel it is small in anyway but when I want I can drop the seat and it feels sweet.

I actually have shorter legs than you, which has pretty much made up my mind I need the medium too.0
