1x9 setup

Hi want to run 1x9 setup dont use granny or top ring not needed over cannock chase.What do i need what works best, ive ordered Mrp guide g1 along with a new 32 ring,i believe the g1 will take up to 36t up front so ratios can be changed.

You might find that a 32t ring might be a little low. I'm running a 11-34 cassette and a 36t ring and I'm able to ride most stuff where I live. I'd run a MRP 1x chain guide if you don't need a bashguard.

Chainline shouldn't be messed up if you run the ring on the inside of the tabs.

Nah, you'll be fine should work okay, just that highest and lowest will be putting more strain on the chain. Plenty of people do it.

a while back I went from 3x9 to 1x9 courtesy of a broken shifter, I bought an N-gear jump stop as the chain dropped inwards a lot (although not outwards) but otherwise it was no bother. check chain length as you may be wise to drop a few links otherwise they can get a bit slappy in the top gears - cable tied old innertube works as a chainstay guard nicely

I got round the llandegla black on this setup quite easily

Would i be correct in thinking without bash and rollers the chain will slap around on the underside of the drive

Recently gone to 1x8 and I can just about winch up the steepest switchbacks on the Monkey with a 34T ring and an 11-34 cassette. There's defintely a knack to it and knowing there's no bail-out granny ring makes me ride differently.

Basic e-thirteen bash guard, no probs with chain line. Chain was a little slappy on the smaller cogs but nothing that taking a few links out couldn't fix.

Don't know why anybody has three rings up front

I'm on an Anthem X3 [full suspension] and just gone 1 x10.

I've ridden around Swinley Forest with only a shorter chain and it didn't come off for 4 good 2 hours rides. I was running a 32t chain ring and although not great for the downhills, kept me happily spinning around.

I've just added an MRP 1x guide and it was easy to fit and hasn't affected the riding at all, i.e. no rubbing. Not sure whether I really need it, but it provides some security and boosts confidence in my bike too.

I'm now looking to get a 36t chain ring, because with a 36t at the back 1:1 should be more than enough for most riding, that I do anyway. And there dead easy to swap too.

My commuter is 1x9, even with a dedicated SS front ring (Saint) and a narrowed BB to correct the chainline it needed a chain guide to keep it on at the front, I use an old front mech locked off on the stops as its cheaper and lighter than any chainguide you can buy!

I can't say I've noticed more chain slap than normal.

Have you seen the Superstar XCR guide? Roughly half the weight of a Shimano XTR front mech and only £17

For a 26er, have you guys had luck with 32 teeth? or have you gone for smaller than that like 30 teeth?

Just asking since 26er 2x9s used to come wiith 42/29 and a 12-32 freewheel.

Now, a lot of 2011 bikes are 38/26 or so, which looks really small...

I'm running mine with 32T on the front and an 11-34 cassette. I'd not have got through my week in france with a setup like that though, definately needed the granny but for everyday riding it's pretty nice. More testing is needed, I'd like to get it up to 34 on the front but I'm not sure I've got the fitness for that.

Thanks, but with a 103mm BB any BB mount means the left hand crank fouls the BB retaining ring, besides the Sora mech I'm using was £10 and with a little fettling only weighs 100g, also as its my commuter I'm running the Saint single ring (46T) which is too large for that puppy.
