garmin edge 800 mapping - dvd needed?

i understand that to prepare a route to ride on the 705 you need the dvd??
is it the same for the edge 800? or if you have the citynav maps can you do it from there?

    You don't need the DVD to prepare a route, just use one of the online services such at BikeRouteToaster rather than mapsource.

    really? do they work as well??

    i have garmin cadence sensor and hrm belt so is it worth just going for the base model edge 800 and buying the map sd card seperate??
    or do you get something extra if you buy the premium packages??
