Halfords C2W scheme, £1000 road bike.

As the title suggests I’m after a new road bike. I currently have a 2010 Scott cross which is now the winter bike so this will only be used when the roads aren’t as full as crap.
Our scheme is open now and closes on the 13th so the obvious choice is the carbon Boardman.
I have spoken to Halfords and they have confirmed that they can get other bikes in if required, so any suggestions there would be good.

But, my concern is that the 2011 bike will be released soon and obviously I’d not be best pleased if they do another £1000 bike that’s better than the current model. Does anyone have any details on the 2011 range.
Also, does anyone know if I can get my ‘voucher’ and keep it to use later?

Cheers,

Cramman.

  • Just found a post regarding the Dolan Nythos (this one I think - http://www.velodromeshop.org.uk/index.p ... oduct&id=8) available through Halfords.

What are people thoughts on that over the Boardman?

I think you can use the voucher whenever you want, but your salary deductions will begin in January whatever you decide to do. I got a mtb this year and didn't get it until about May.

When the 2011 Boardman Carbon comes out, I'd have thought that it will be more than £1k though won't it? From what I've heard, Halfords won't allow you to add cash to your voucher.

  • Cramman - I'm in a similar situation and have been tracking when Halfords were going to discount the 2010 Team Carbon from £1199 to £999 - which they have just done. However, my assumption is the 2011 model will come in at £1199 and Halfords will only hold the £999 price for the 2010 model until all stock is gone. Stock of 2010 models seems to be low, so as vouchers will not be available until January, it's just a case of waiting and seeing what's in stock at the time.
I've had various feedback on what other brands Halfords can supply for the C2W scheme which seems to vary on who you talk to. Suggest you call their dedicated C2W number and tell them what you want, rather than asking what they can supply.

I emailed Halfords to check on the 2011 prices and got this really helpful reply

Thank you for contacting cycle2work. Unfortunately we have not yet been given the 2011 Boardman details. You could add an amount to your voucher to take into account any price rises and VAT increases, and then use any surplus to get your safety accessories.

So can anyone use their crystal ball to tell me how much to add!!!

  • Thanks for the replies, It seems odd it's being kept such a secret.
  • When I signed up for my C2W scheme last October, with Halfords, when I decided to get the Team Carbon, they let me order one there and then, even though I didn't have my voucher, and it was reserved at the then ticket price of £999. When I heard that the Ltd Ed was being released, again without a voucher, I rang and asked if I could order one of those as well. No problem, kept the original order going through as well in case there was a problem with the Ltd Ed (fortunately there wasn't!)
With stocks low for the 2010 bike, and the 2011 bike likely to be more expensive, try to order one prior to getting your voucher and see what happens.

Great bike, even in it's current guise. Unfortunately my employer isn't repeating the scheme or I'd have been looking for a winter bike as well, leaving my lovely carbon in the garage!!!
