Very pretty, but I think it would look better with gears. For some reason redundant gear hangers really upset me <runs off to irrational hatred thread>1985 Mercian King of Mercia - work in progress (Hah! Who am I kidding?)

at some point i'll get rid of the gear hanger and the shifter braze ons. maybe a benotto champagne re-spray with some overpriced decals from ebay.
the thing that really bugs the hell out of me is the inner chain ring - it's stamped on rather than bolted, so i think the only way to get rid of it is to drill it out. slightly worried about a spectacular DIY fail.0 -

I drilled the inner ring off a chainset that came with an eBay frame I Fixed.
It wasn't hard to do but the end result was a chainset that seemed too flexy.
I don't know whether the inner ring acted as a stiffener, or if it was flexy to begin with and I was just more aware of it afterwards, but in the end I swapped it out for a better chainset anyway. Being a 52t didn't help- it would probably have been OK if the fixed chainring was smaller, as the flex would have been less significant.
Given that you'll need to crank it pretty hard, running an 81" gear, I would advise against modifying it.
If I were in your shoes, I'd set up an ebay search for a 50t or 48t chainset, that you can set up to run as a single... preferably in black, to go with the rims, stem, hubs and the black seatpost, which you don't seem to have fitted yet, for some reason(!).
Nice bike.
Cheers,

that's what i'm worried about. far too lazy to think about new chainrings/cranks/bb yet. will wait until it fails spectacularly0 -

I'd say definitely not hack the old chainset apart - get a nice vintage track chainset.1985 Mercian King of Mercia - work in progress (Hah! Who am I kidding?)

Please don't puppy kill it - it is bad enough that it has no gears now, don't remove that option forever!0

Absolutely, I might have an irrational hang up about redundant gear hangers, but please don't take a hacksaw to it. Swap in a track/SS chainset and BB, and keep the original in a box (with the derailleurs and the DT shifters if you still have them) for when your knees give up.1985 Mercian King of Mercia - work in progress (Hah! Where have the gears gone? Did they break?
It's just a hill. Get over it.0 -
and the geary nonsense is wrapped in oily rags in the shed *just in case*. but i have other bikes for gears. and they are less fun.0
