Mavic are generally regarded as having some of the strongest wheels out there. Try Ebay or in the classifieds for a pair of used Ksyriums. Altenatively Dura Ace wheels are also very well regarded.
£500 seems a lot to spend for wheels on an Allez btw.0 -
I have the same problem! Similar weight. I run a Specialized Sirrus Elite 2009 and find the spokes keep loosening/breaking, esp when I go up hills.
My friends say I am not very careful in my riding style and I think I throw it about a bit when I push hard up steep hills!
Any advise on a strong rear wheel would be really great. Although I am thinking more around £60-£80 I'm afraid :-(
Thanks0 -
get some of the fulcrum sevens, only £100 and seem fine to me (I'm also a big lad)

I know its a bit excessive for my allez but i am spending £10 every other week on spokes and sorting wheels out so want a set of wheels that i am not going to faff about with back and too to the LBS every other week ,had a rear wheel built for my last bike it was a mavic and seemed to do the trick but i believe some mavic's come with a gurantee of some sort as well, might have a look at the fulcrums as well seem to be a bit cheaper,Stanway steve have `you had no problems at all with them how are they going up hill when you put a lot of force through them?0

They are fine, I am down from 19+ to 16 .5 now and pushed myself up a 'slope' the other day at over 30mph ( prob for only 30 secs) and cant say I even thought of the wheels haha0

That was the wheel i had built for me guess it wouldnt be that bad to just get another one built0 -
...with stronger spokes? They vary a lot as you probably know. I was looking at handbuilts recently and whenever I ordered some online bike kit I added a spoke of a different type. Quite interesting...you should see my spoke collection. I can't interest my wife in it at all.0

RS80s...i have them on my allez elite. they totally transformed the bike. similar in feel to the dura ace wheels but alot cheaper but only slightly heavier and maybe not quite as stiff (though still pretty damn stiff imo). the wheels soak up alot of the vibration, maybe its down to the carbon laminate construction.
i had xero's on previously which were a pile of junk. so flexy theyve scraped the inside of the chainstays and forks and im only 66kg.0 -

yeah i broke a hed jet 9 and i'm barely 162lbs what a monumental swear word. serves me right for not buying those mavic cosmic carbones or the DA 7850's. but the hed's are so pretty and when not borked they are smoother than butter.0

I'm a similar size and I've had Mavic Aksiums on my trainer for years. They're as true now as the day i got them. Never had to touch em. Can't be bad. 8)0

Specialized Sirrus Elite 2009
That doesn't count it's a Hybrid !0 -
my 2 year old rear aksium is not very true, but i have done lots of miles on it. they came with the bike, i forget the point of the post. yes buy the pretty wheels and feel like a king when you ride them, any other advice is irrelevant.0

Fulcrum Racing 3s. I have a 2008 set of these and rate them and that is a pretty good price.0

Nice as the shimano RS80/DA 7850s are, if you are a big wheel smasher then I'd stay away from them. You can get stronger wheels.
IME for outright strength you are best off either with handbuilts (built by someone who is very skilled at wheel building) or else with a pair of big alu spoked wheels (Fulcrum 1s, Campag Eurus etc).0 -
I have Mavic Asksiums and Kysirum Elites and have weighed between 17st and 15.5st.
The Aksiums were OEM on the bike and I pretty quickly broke the rear free hub on a steep climb. That has been back to the shop twice and then a bought a replacement plastic "bearing" from the US which I fitted myself and then put them on my wifes bike.
I then upgraded to the Elites and so far have snapped one rear and one front spoke. Much as you always want to recommend the stuff you have got I could not suggest Mavics for a big rider.
Not sure what I will do next but I will not be buying Mavics again, which is a shame because I think they look and perform great when they are not breaking/broken.0 -

Have a chat with stevie www.wheelroom.co.uk, hand builds wheels to your spec. sure you could get something bomb proof with that sort of money.0

Do you hit many potholes on your trainer?
Aksiums are pretty good for the price I reckon. I have a pair that I use for rougher road rides.Scottish and British...and a bit French0 -
I took the Aksiums off my new Specialized Roubaix and put hand made wheels on instead.
There are Pictures and stuff about it on my blog
Basically the reason I did it is that I will be riding hundreds of miles often on poor roads so I prefer the extra strength and don't mind the extra weight
Aksiums are great wheels, don't get me wrong, but the ones I've replaced them with are better for what I want to do0 -
I've said it before and i will say it again handbuilts all the way, speak to Adam or Ryan at www.wheelguru.co.uk
Two ex rapha / recycling lads and mechanics to the team after they had a year out ( Ryans now a GB squad mechanic ).
Who else could you ever want to build your wheels?0
