Dear All,

I will soon require a commuting bike for a 9 mile route. It includes one hill (I live in Sheffield) and I'm not sure if I should get the Charge or Specialized?

Which do people feel is less attractive to a thief?

And in the winter I want a bike that is safe for potential tricky conditions

Cheers

  • Neither will be less attractive to a thief.....if you want something that will run wider tyres check out the specialised tricross single. I think that will take up to 28cm tyres and full mudguards.

Not sure if either is 'ideal' as such - Langster does not have fitments for full guards tho no doubt Cruds will be ok, Charge the same ?
As for safe - both ok I'd think - don't see why one would be better or any unsaf although having capability for 25mm+ tyres might be a bonus, again I don't know myself but 25mms and Cruds are likely the biggest youd be aable to fit on these as they are trackie-style as opposed to single speed commuting style bikes. If that is more what you need then there are other simple single speed bikes around, Pompino, Paddy Wagon, Pearson Touche, Genesis, Trek 2nd District (just got one of these myself - comes with 25mm tyres and I reckon it might manage 28s) - quite a few.
Specialized is a very well known and maybe more attractive frame to the masses. Sure I've seen some muted/matt paint jobs so worth checking it out, some good deals on these at the moment.

Thieves will love both. People say drop handlebars are a turn-off, if that helps. And they'll both be as "safe" as each other.
