Wheels to make my 9 year old race faster

I've just picked up a barely used Giant Defy 4 for my son. He starts his second season of closed road racing in March and I want to buy him some better wheels to race on. The standard wheels (unbranded rims and Formula) are okay for training. Can anybody recommend some decent 8 speed Shimano compatible wheels that won't be too bling for the bike? Strength is not really an issue as he is so light.

    8 speed cassettes will fit on all but some of the really top end wheelsets.

    Mavic Askiums, cost about £130, bombproof, and ride well.
