ive scrappdd the idea of the fury and gt and am thinking of buying the vulcan v spec as it is supose to be a good frame a starter bike. Plus halfords cnt reli screw it up as its quite a basic bike to set up.going to put some avid juicy 5 or mayb 3 nt sure yet and also some rockshox recon or reba forks.id like the bike to be as maintenance free as possible. what amount of travel can i run without ruining the geometry of the bike i imagine it would be 120max?? jst wnted to know if u had any comments or suggestions?cheers

What is your budget? I can't help feeling that by spending the money like that you'll end up with a bike with a 'lopsided' spec with the rest inferior to your high spec add ons, you'll need better tyres and then wheels and crankset in short order.....
Stock travel on a Vulcan is 100mm I believe, so 120mm will already be making it feel 'lazy' if its reflected in the axle to crown distance.

dnt hav a budget reli obviously nothing ludicrously expensive.the idea if the vulcan was to get sumet that cost little so if i didnt keep to riding it wouldnt be a big loss but if i did keep to it the frame would be good eniugh to upgrade with better parts that was the idea anyway.if i was going to put five inch travel forks what else would i need to upgrade to stop the steering from being lazy?0

Wouldn’t bother....why buy a bike and then chuck money at it !!!! the V spec has rim brakes so upgrading to Juicy 5 you will also need a new wheel set...so £230 for the bike another £120 for a set of disc compatible wheels, another £150 for the brakes, at least £250 for the fork....so your at £750 for a average spec bike (as your groupset will still be crap)....you would be mad not to buy the Fury or look around at the 2010 sale bikes...
Plus as incompetent as some Halfords are I am sure they will do a better job of building a bike out of a box rather than you faffing around fitting forks and brakes etc....also you will have a 12 month warranty on a bike out of the box, you won't if you start changing major components...

You can't 'upgrade' bits to correct the geometry (head angle) you've changed by fitting forks that are too long, well except for reframing the bike with a frame designed for them!
I think you need to learn to walk before trying to run, get a good sound bike at your target budget, learn to ride it, then and only then start thinking of messing with it would be my advice!

The frame on the vulcan is decent, but it still doesn't make any sense to buy with plans to upgrade, you'll aways get something better for the same money if you buy complete.Uncompromising extremist0

Or try a mint condition 2nd hand bike. Checking a bike over is not as tricky as it sounds if you get one that's barely used.
There's plenty of advice on t'internet as to what to look for. You can just tell from it's condition if it's been used much... scratches etc. Then check gears, brakes, whether the wheels are straight, or the frame is bent etc. I've bought 3 in the last year for different people... the best being a really good GT Agressor which retail at Halfords for around £700. Got it down to £300. Really good spec and absolutely mint.
Most bikes are worth around 50% of their value after a year. You should be able to get a 2nd hand Fury, or a Rockhopper for around £300 - £350Cool, retro and sometimes downright rude MTB and cycling themed T shirts. Just MTFU.

OK rear mech is a bit cheap (Alivio) but thats a much cheaper easier upgrade than what you suggest!
VFM wise right now I don't think you can beat it.
Or the Kraken, fork not as good, better mech's, £20 less

Am I just grumpy today, or does it irritate anyone else that someone asking for help can't even be arsed to try and spell or punctuate anywhere near correctly? Or even use capitals.
Lazy buggers.

Personally i think you are being grumpy, you have to be an english teacher or something of a similar nature. As for the lack of punctuation and spelling, im at work and therefore dont really have the time to do so. That is my excuse anyway0
