Flat pedal choice?

Hi,
I've just picked up my new bike and want to swap out the stock pedals to something a little better. I still ride flats, I know all the benefits of clipless, efficiency, weight, better looks but I just can't get on with them.. I hate the feeling of being clipped in and constantly fall over as I can never release myself. Anyways, what flats should I go for...
Aesthetics are of course important, so I'm looking for a black or dark gray/silver model to match the chainset and crank arms. Weight is also a consideration.. My riding style is trail/all mountain at the weekend and commuting in the week. Budget would be around the £50 mark I guess.
Any advice gratefully received.
Thanks

I've checked the roster and I'm on "recommending Superstar Nanos or HT Components Nanos" duty. So there you go.
Wellgo's MG1 are great value- light, reliable, and decently strong. Someone'll be along in a minute to recommend DMR V8s or V12s, you should ignore that as they're both made by Wellgo to an inferior design and then sold my DMR for more.
The Nanos aren't such value as the MG1s- you have to pay a fair bit more to get the equivalent spec- but they're thinner and wider which I'm beginning to think is worth the extra. I've got MG1s on 2 bikes and alu Nanos on the 3rd and I think the Nanos are the best of them. When money allows I'm getting a set of mag Nanos on ti axles for the little bike.
I've also got a set of Outland CNCs, now they're quite interesting but not, I think, up to the same standard. And also extremely bloody sharp, they mill the edges and corners to a point so it's not just the pins you need to worry about.Uncompromising extremist0 -
MG-1 work great for me on the MTB and roadie.
Don't people do searches on here any more??"I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0 -

I'm with this completely
The Outlands are very sharp indeed, I just brushed against the side of them and they scratched my leg up
MG1's are great but the Superstars are worth the extra for the bigger size (hence why I went for them in the first place) and if you find them slightly lacking in grip, go and buy some nuts and bolts from poundland and put them in (assuming you have the thru-pin model, if not, get some cheap grub screws, no point in spending loads on replacement pins if you can get them cheap) this improves the grip (and leg shredding capabilities ) a huge amount, not that they weren't grippy in the first place.
And DMR, please learn, your pedals are sh!te, although the new ones may be better. The bearings get movement immediately, the paint doesn't last two seconds, the axels are cheese and you can get similar (much better) pedals sold directly from Wellgo for much much less0 -
I am another one for superstar pedals.
They are thin, this is the most important thing on a pedals as you can put more power without rolling off the pedals.
You should also consider the long term.
Spares from superstar are very cheap. Most manufacturers charge a large sum for spares as they know you are a captive market.
Replacement bushings from SS, £2, for wellgo £8.
Superstar is a great company, they treat their customers well and deserve support.
(I had a problem with my seatpost on thursday and sent SS an e-mail about 7pmish. I got an e-mail back 9pm saying that he would send a same day courier so it would not affect my weekends riding! That is customer service). Why would I care about 150g of bike weight, I just ate 400g of cookies while reading this?0 -
To be fair on people, the search function NEVER seems to bring up the results you want, i searched pedals once and not ONE of the results even had the word pedal in it.
+1 for superstar nano tech. Had mine for 6 months and theyve literally been through hell and back. Thick gritty mud every weekend, cleaned with hose pointing at them, countless rock pedal strikes and theyre what the bike seems to hit when i fall off the most. The paintwork is all still completely in tact and the anodising is still brilliant, and the bearings are good as new.
Stay away from the white, it isnt anodising, its paint, which is much less strong.0 -

Sigh, does it really matter? this is a buying advice forum - it's kind of to be expected. If the thread doesn't interest you then don't post, it's not an obligation right? Besides, try to do a search for "flat pedals" and see what results you get back. Live let live, don't be a jerk
But to everyone else, the superstar pedals seem to be a favourite.. will look into them. thanks for all the advice!0 -

Not being funny here but if you do a seatch of mtb buying advice for flat and pedals, what you get is a page of results which are mostly about what flat pedals to buy, with nice clear titles to boot, easy.Uncompromising extremist0 -
Oooh yay, I can say this again.
MG1's, light, cheap, tough, decent looking, pick fourAnd now you know, and knowing is half the battle

really? I just don't. I've done a load more searches for flat pedals, filtering on the mtb buying advice forum and not. I only other get one other post related to trial flat pedal, iIt's the 14th on the list but in fairness, it does ask an almost identical question to mine with the same budget too .0 -
are you remembering the "and"? If you don't, you'll get every page with flat or pedals.Uncompromising extremist0

Not been on for a month but nice (sad) to see that the same threads are asked daily or at worst weekly.................0

OK OK OK OK. got it now.. the "AND" makes the world of difference. I shall remember that for future posts . Thank you Northwind.0 -
No worries- it's quite a common thing for forum search engines but it's not obvious is it? Can't remember where I picked it up but it's dead handy.Uncompromising extremist0

On a side note, or back to the main topic i have kona wah wah's which have been great. Nearly the same as the superstar pedals i believe but the superstar has ridges on the side and i wanted them smooth. i managed to get them for £50 so there wasn't much price difference. They're nice and slim and pretty tough, i still hit rocks aplenty despite the slimness. nice large platform with plenty of grip and i don't notice the bump in the middle one bit.0

These are my favourite pedals:
Beautiful and thin...
Not to mention 4 cartridge bearings...0 -
And around £120 :shock:And now you know, and knowing is half the battle
