So i'm in need of new shifters and need some advice

can you use triple shifters on a double chainset (compact)

this probably sounds like a daft question but i have heard of it being done before

cheers

Yes, you just set them up to use two of the positions instead of three.

  • Yes you can, I got it done on my first bike, however it not perfect at all. After a while it does not really work very well, and I don't recommend it.I only use this bike for turbo trainning it got so bad that I took of the front meck and change gear by HAND!!!

I know older Shimano stuff doesn't differentiate between a double and triple shifter. I have Ultegra 6500 on the BMC. It came as a triple and last year fitted a double chainset. There's just more trimming positions with a double than with the triple. I didn't even bother changing the front derailleur for the double version and have no problems.

I've never tried newer 10 speed stuff but it should be okay if you set up the front derailleur position and stops well.
