  • Got some Conti Travel Contacts on my 'road' bike. Pumped up to 60 +psi the treads don't come into contact with the road so they're completely silent with little rolling resistance.

Make a huge difference in terms of speed. But don't mistake them for all-terain tyres because of the tread. They offer a bit of grip when pedalling through mud, etc, but with those pressures still get very skittish as soon as you leave the road in the wet!

    What wheels?

Its the wheels that are important in road tyre choice. What is the min width your rims are warranted for?

My stans flows for example can only take a 2" min tyre, so road choice is limited. Although I'd look a bit daft commuting on my FS AM bike.

I have some WTB Slickasuarus on my commuter, they run really well, are predicatable when its slippery (on road) and will take 80psi for a fast drag free run.

Don't get cheap, my WTB's were usedwhen I bought them, 500 miles later they look no different, I had some cheap 'Bronx' on my old commuter for 400miles, my Daughter now has them and at about 750miles they have a distinct flat portion on the rear and will need changing soon.

Why don't you swap the rear with the front then? Ideally before they got the flat spot.

The wear profile of the front is always different.

By the time it was pointed out it was too late, so we'll just replace the rear and keep the front for a bit longer!
