4000 U.S.D. wheels

Flipping through the Colorado Cyclist bike catalog the other day I came across their custom build wheel page. For about 600 U.S.D. I could get Campy Record or DA 7900
hubs(with skewers) laced to either Open Pro or Reflex rims, with 14-15 double butted spokes. It sounded good to me. Lightweight, inexpensive, strong, very durable, easy to work on, can be used for just about anything(even cross). On the next page was a Campy Hyperon Two clincher wheelset for 4000 U.S.D. Almost 8 times as much as the "handbuilts".
Now my question is, and it's actually a serious one, is "just exactly what better qualities would I NOTICE in riding / owning these wheels over the obviously "inferior" handbuilds?".
Disreguarding bling / showoff value.
Really, I'm serious. :? :?

Great idea, but here's the problem. My wife thought it was totally outragious that I would pay 150 U.S.D. for a saddle. Secondly, I would like to take a ski vacation this winter and that 4000 would definately come in handy. Hell, I could take two ski vacations for that
kind of money. Anyway, you all know I'm old and set in my ways, so I'm gonna stick with
the cheaper wheels in any case. But, I really am curious about what you gain from that amount of money? Other than bling value.
In my fantasy world of unlimited funds I own all of the "right stuff", but then again don't we all?0 -
Dunno. Never tried a pair.0

You'd notice the better vertical compliance and lateral rigidity0

In terms of what you get for the 4000 USD I would also add a higher grade of materials maybe, then there's the research that went in to them possibly too, amongst other overheads in their creation?0 -

That may be, but all I can say is I had better notice something, or better yet 3 or 4 somethings that are really, really, really great improvements over the handbuilts.
I mean I really do like a good steak but, like everyone, there is a limit to what I'm willing to pay for one. And can you really make a steak taste 8 times better by charging 8 times as much? After all it is only a steak. Unless of course it's the one AC ate.0 -
its a case of diminishing returns when it comes to bike parts.
They will be better, just not 8 times better, but if you wan the best and can afford it....0
