Hi Guys,

I am starting to get into Mountain biking and would like to spend a bit more money on a bike. I just wondered if someone could give a very quick run down of the decent repetuable bike makers so i dont make any purchasing errors.... doesnt have to be the most expensive... basically i dont want to spend £2000 on a great spec bike to find out its the Lada of the bike world and will be tough to sell!!

Cheers :)

therer are many repetuable bike makes out there. It would take a page or two to list them.

have a look at the buying guide in the buying section of the forum.

Buy what works for you, not what fits in with the crowd.

Just pour through the reviews online and in mags, check them out in the shops (ignore what the store will try to sell you as that won't always be the best bike for you), get some test rides, check opinion of friends, but don't feel you have to buy something because it's the current trend or reject something because it's not seen as cool.

I'd consider what makes a good frame, and then look at the components you get with the bike and check the reviews on them. If there are options to upgrade components you may find a bike that gets an average review may be miles better because of an upgrade. i.e. great frame, but rubbish shock or brakes, etc.

Do you want to jump straight into £2k also? I assume you're after a full sus, but what are you after (XC, All Mountain, DH, Freeride, etc)? Do you want an uber light bike and are planning to race, or do you want something to chuck about anywhere?

So many options. For a full sus starting out, I'd look at the £1 to £2k range but you don't need to spend more money to get better. In some cases the extra money just gets you bling or a lighter bike, not better (unless you are a weight weenie when it matters, but your budget is going to end up being £5k+ !).
