Anyone currently at uni and kept their bike with them? How do you go about washing it and keeping it? Any tips?

I'm not even sure what university accomodation consists of really.

Have you seen what the secure lock up looks like? They may not be too bad.

I'm just hoping i can get an offer and achieve the grades i need for my local uni and live at home. Its the one i most want to go to anyway besides Edinburgh.

How much does a student house cost nowadays?

Well edinburghs student accomodation is about £90 a week plus a £100 deposit.

I think contacting the uni directly probably is the only way to really find out.

I'll let you know if anything of interest arises

Just seen that one of my choices, Leeds met, has cycle storage too.

To be honest, you'd be better off living off campus. I lived in Edinburgh for four years and had nice flats at less than £80 a week. That was not far from centre either so depending on where you are you can most definitely find somewhere nicer, better and less noisy off campus that'll be much better for keeping your bikes in.

The same goes for pretty much every city these days. There's plenty of places near Leeds met, probably closer to the actual building that would be much better for keeping bikes in. Plus you don't have to worry about fire alarms going off all the bloody timre! :)

when I asked about keeping my bikes in my dorm the woman acted as though I said "Could I take a massive dump in the middle of the room and spread it about the walls?"

I keep mine in the bikeshed. There's a code on the door and a dozen sheffield stands. It's right outside my mates building, so hopefully that should stop anybody from trying anything.

For washing I just clean it with a mop bucket full of soapy water and an old sponge. Chain it up outside while it dries and then put it back in the shed.

I do any maintenance in my room, which has resulted in quite a few tyre marks up the wall trying to get it in the flat :P
  • Just bring the bike in with you if it's clean and wait until they say something.

Secure storage is terrible, it may be secure, but only to people outside the university who can't get in. Then some scrote nicks it because he knows it's there.

As far as cleaning, just bring a bucket down full of water and soap, scrub everything off with a sponge and tooth brush, then use what's left of the water to dump on the bike and wash it away. Works a treat for me.

All good advice guys, thanks. Living off campus is always an option, its still far away from the decision time.

I got both my bikes with me at the moment in London. Fortunately the halls have a secure room for them out in the yard at the back, secure gate to get through first right outside the security office, lots of cctv, big heavy double locked door, loads of sheffield stands in there... only people in our halls have keys, and I really doubt any of them would steal a bike from there.

I keep the road bike in my room sometimes, fortunately the lift has 2 sets of doors so I ride in one side then ride out the other when I arrive on my floor

Leave the bike locked to a fence during the day if I cycle to uni, have a kryptonite at the uni and one at the halls and a cable to go through the front wheel which goes back and forth. Not been stolen yet... although now I've said that

Aye, there's a lot worse things you'll find in uni dorms, I'm pretty sure. If they tell you to take it outside, just say no. At the end of the day, why should you?
