Just a quick one- does anyone have any links to real information on 'famous' climbs in the Uk? Considering what my objectives will be for next year and some info on which are the toughest/ longest climbs in the UK would be really useful. For example, is Mow Cop really 25% for a mile?!

Try here. Richie is gradually providing what will be a comprehensive and personal review of most of the top climbs in Britain.

  • Look here http://www.climbbybike.com. It has Mow Cop as 1.45km at 11.3%

Or DIY: plot the bottom and the top in a mapping site like mapmyride.com, enable elevation and do distance/elevation change x 100. If you don't know the climb, it can be trial and error, but you'll get there in the end.

That book is long on hype, short on detail.
  • Not a comprehensive list but it is free - http://cumbriancyclist.co.uk/ukclimbs.aspx
Pain hurts much less if its topped off with beating your mates to top of a climb.

Are those climbs that are in Sportives, or climbs in general?

There is the A53 between Leek and Buxton which rides at 8.7% for 1.9km.
Saintbury Nr Broadway which rises at 8.7% for 2.2km.
Fish Hill rises at 8.4% for 1.6km.
and Edge Hill which rises at 12% for 0.75km.

Richie is moving the site away from the emphasis on sportives, but the climbs database has always just been about the best road climbs in the country. It's a real labour of love!

easily the best and most comprehensive list of uk climbs i've seen. i like the way they show the human side of the climbs from someone who has actually ridden them, and not just a collection of stats. can't wait to see how the site develops.

not even close! the 25% bit is what? 100 metres? if that!
    Manchester wheelers

    PB's
    10m 20:21 2014
    25m 53:18 20:13
    50m 1:57:12 2013
    100m Yeah right.

A 1 mile stretch of road at 25% would end up 1/4 mile up in the sky. That's sea level to 400m in 1.6 km. I think there is a hill at Perranporth that is half this severity, or was it Porlock?

I can't understand why Constitution Hill in Swansea is not on the list. It was used in the Tour of Britain. :D

I believe South Wales is on the to do list as are the North Pennines and the Forest of Bowland!
  • Would like to see Toot Hill in Macc Forest featured. Most have one of the steepest stretches of tarmac in the Peak District (a prolonged stretch of 25%?). Harder than Mow Cop IMO.

It is quite isolated and quiet as most of the traffic takes the alternative route up by Trentabank Resevoir/Standing Stones. Climb is sheltered from the wind, but that can lead to the surface being a bit damp sometimes. (though not had any wheelspin problems).
