Bike Thieves

Anyone who thieves from other individuals is pretty low, so it might sound dickish to say that the two lowlifes who nicked my cheapish (£250) Diamondback FS MTB from my local station back at Easter did me a favour in the long run :?

I had cash at the time, so plumped for a decent hardtail MTB as a replacement, and started to increase mileages as it was so much nicer to ride, then commuted for the first time, which in turn got me onto my first road bike in late summer which I love with a passion, and have dropped around 3 stone so far as a bonus :D

they were caught and had a court order against them to pay me £50 each x 2 in compo, but I reckon I've as much chance of getting that as I have of getting Nelly Furtado covered in Waitrose custard from Santa for Crimbo  but bollocks to it - they did me a favour really*

* having said that, if I caught anyone trying the same with my Colnago I'd leather them quite severely without hesitation, just in case you're reading this, scumbags

    Nice tale...
Still push for the compensation, as that'll cover upgrades, and you know you need them!
Start with a budget, finish with a mortgage!
  • Guess this will be as close as you get this year (unless you win the lottery):

  • Unfortunately, those same scumbags are likely to be unemployed and therefore not able to pay you the compensation in one go, so you'll find yourself getting cheques through from the court service for £1.00, or something equally insulting, as they will have to pay it direct from their undeserved benefits.

However, it doesn't seem like you're too bothered and enjoying your riding. Congratulations on the weight loss.

Thanks for the responses chaps, I forgot to relate details of the theft which may just help others if same happens to them....

Parked bike and locked to secure bike rack with a decent Magnum keyed cable lock on Easter Sunday to go to meet some foreign friends in London for the day - a fair bit of ale sampling meant I caught the last train arriving at local station around 01:00

When I went to retrieve my bike I was surprised to find that a combination lock which I had noticed laying around when I left mine had been ADDED to the rack/bike :? Then I noticed that my cable lock had been half cut through with a hacksaw

There was of course nobody around on the station a that time on Easter Monday, and wrongly I assumed they had tried to saw through the Magnum, failed and added the combo out of spite, so set off on the 2 mile walk home

What they had actually done was used the combo to immobilise the bike until they could finish the job undisturbed, which I quickly realised when I returned at lunchtime to find an empty space  They were probably around the corner watching me looking perplexed

That, my friend, is a very old trick. If you'd hid round the corner they would have appeared like a shot the moment you dissappeared, and you would have them bang to rights!

You always have the option of employing a bailiff to get your money from them. I'll bet they've got a large screen HD TV etc that can easily be sold to cover your compensation.
I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.

Yeah 50' HD surrahnd sarnd innit, no doubt - i tend to think constant chipping away at their dole/skunk money would be more annoying to them, and I'm not hard up a.t.m :)
