I'd like to be able to stream music digitally to other rooms in my house. Currently, I have a seperates system in the basement, but usually end up listening to Spotify over my laptop in the lounge.

What I'd like, at a reasonable budget (and if possible):

- use laptop or PS3 as a server for all my digital music
- be able to stream music to my basement hifi
- add some speakers in lounge and kitchen so I can stream to these also
- remotely control with a handset.

Any advice on setting up and/or equipment (Digital streaming audio device)?

    Squeezeboxes.

music on a PC or NAS.

    Squeezebox touch to stereo.
    Squeezebox Radio in the kitchen
lounge? another touch to some powered speakers.

each can play music synced or separately, they can also access net radio, there is also a possibility/option for premium spotify play back.

all can be wired or wireless.

I use one wired and one wireless.

  • oooh - nice. Does it have to be a Touch? Just found some cheapish Squeezebox receivers. Will do some research tomorrow.

    yes it is that good.

the touch is good in that it will also play from SD card and USB and shows the album art on the touch screen. (I also get it on the phone).

I have my music ripped to FLAC on a netgear duo NAS

  • No I don't have an iPhone or any seperate storage device so I'd like to make use of my laptop and/or PS3 if poss. TBH, I still have most of my music, unripped, on CD and Vinyl (I'm a luddite, I know). Will be upgrading to a Smart phone soon-ish though.

i am currently sitting just to the right of about 600 CDs and behind be I have about 300 Lps and a fair few 7" and 12"ers and I dont want to think of the cost of a new cartridge for the turntable.

the main thing i would say is look at how you want to play back your music PC/Squeezebox/Sonos or............... and then rip the music in the most suitable format. ripping it losslessly (any format) is a must as you can then use it to make any format including reburning as a CD.

there are other media streamers that will do more (video as well) like the WD TV) the Apple TV and others. I know nothing about them.

steve has done something similar. http://www.bikeradar.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12742117

and NapD well I would like his HiFi kit.

Too many options due to what is available and personal preferences towards it.

Try the What HiFi forums to see what has been done there. Serious amount of reading.
None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.

  • I haven't even started to think about wireless yet....only half way through ripping...zzzzz. I spent the last 20 minutes renaming all the tracks and ordering them correctly having ripped from a CD I burnt using itunes a while ago which clearly ignored the original audio file stucture.....its painful at times.

    Just lovely.

It may not meet your *reasonable budget* criteria though...
