Getting a new phone through work tomorrow. Nothing special, Nokia 5230.
I plan on using it with sports tracker and all the usual guubbins you'd expect. But I'm somewhat confused. My mobile Service provider is trying to get me to go for a 2gb per month data package, for an extra £20p/m, but I'm not sure I'll need it as I know exatly fark all about these things.
It'll hardly ever be used. When I put apps and games and stuff on it, they'll be downloaded to my computer first then USBd on there. I'll use the sat-nav occasionally, and the GPS regularly.
Will this use more than the standard 'free' 100MB p/m data allowance?
Cheers.

i have a smartphone and its comes with 500mb and i use for everything
internet
emails
downloads
maps
facebook
so a 100mb should do if you just want to use a sports track a few times a week
youtube video is around 2mb - 15+mb.
each webpage is roughly 20kb-75kb depending on what website it is and that does not include other stuff like flash players that are on that page.
basic emails(no pics, just words) arent that much. i believe they fall in the range of 2kb-10kb (rough estimate)0 -
I have 500mb a month free. Using the internet whenever I was bored and out of range of a Wifi signal, I used a grand total of 8mb last month.
If you're not going to use it heavily, 100mb will be fine.0 -
That's what I was hoping to hear. Cheers
I guess I can always see what my first months useage is like (you always use more in the first month of having a new phone anyway) and get the bigger package next month if I need it.
I think they also do a 500mb package for another fiver a month.0 -
I got my new phone less than a week ago, so far I have used 123mb  I have 3GB with my package though so I've not been at all careful about it and I guess most of that usage is from downloading new apps, which will slow down very shortly."Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling." ~James E. I've got that exact phone and it ticks all the boxes. Endomondo and Sportstracker are both very good at what they do, I rate them both very highly, sometimes if shows up as going in a straight line from A to B at a certain point in the journey if signal is lost though which can sometimes be a nuisance(in a valley hah) but the functions are first class. I never use above my 150mb usage a month that I get on PAYG top up so its fine for me.0

I had the 5800 and never went anywhere near the data limit on my package, 1Gb. Usually under 200mb/month and that was emails every 30 mins, google maps and internet use mainly looking at BR :oops:I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0

I have unlimited and use all of it every month.
really though, its the GPS that the sports trackers use mostly... and I dont THINK they use data... or not much at least (I may be talking crap...)I like bikes and stuff0 -
If the maps are already saved onto the phone then you have no data. If it's like the navigation on android phones (i.e. using google maps) then data is used as it needs to download the maps as you moveFormally known as Coatbridgeguy0

I normally use about 400mb/month, and that's with minimal use by my standards, but I use my phone alot.
I think for normal usage for someone who is not it as much as me, 100mb per month should be enough.
2gb for 20 a month sounds like a stupid price though, I got my brand new Motorola Milestone, with 1000 minutes and 2000 texts and 2gb internet per month for 30 a month with phone thrown in free, and were generally much more expensive here in Austria than in England.0 -
I miss my UK contract to be honest. Here the providers take the piss regarding contracts (things like charging more for calls to other mobile networks and other scams they stopped doing in UK years ago). Pretty much everyone has to use the state owned telecoms provider by the sheer fact most people are on it (and therefore cheaper to contact). The online browsing charges are insane when you consider the average monthly wage here. When I told people here I had 3gb online, 600 minutes and 1000 texts (with HTC desire thrown in) I'm always greeted by a look of incredulityFormally known as Coatbridgeguy0

I should add the contract was for £20 a monthFormally known as Coatbridgeguy0

well its capped at 3g. But if I manage to use 3g in a month on my phone i'd be fairly shocked!0 -
