Hi all, I'm a Sheffield local and to my shame have never been up to wharncliffe...... Basically got a week off next week so going to get some riding in, I've been slightly put off by people saying it's ultra hard. Am I going to kill myself if I go without full face etc?! Im a pretty good rider, but I'll be going by myself, heard there's blind 8 foot drop offs etc there?!

Cheers

Wharnecliffe was actually the first place i ever mountain biked

There used to be a sort of cross country type loop, which was probably the equivalent of a trail centre red route, but it wasn't signed and i was relying on following my brother (who was the one who decided Wharnecliffe was a good place for a newbie  ).

Last time i was there (a few years ago at least) it was definetly a place you'd want to have a local show you round, it wasn't signed and there was everything from ultra scary downhills, to the stuff that we did which was technical cross country.

Check out singletractions website as they are now responsible for the trails http://www.singletraction.co.uk/projects.php?page=Wharncliffe, you might even find someone to show you round
  • TBH its super boggy and not much fun whether you know it or not this time of year (well the XC route anyway) I live 5 mins away and tbh i'm not much of a 'local' for it as its just more fun to go to ladybower of dalby ect (worth the extra drive out). but yes there are some hard parts to Wharncliffe but tbh you shouldn't go hell for leather on an unknown trail anyway so you should be fine if you choose to go!

yup Its really boggy at the mo, i`ve been up last 2 wkends.

Red xc route is a waste of time, if its not boggy its destroyed, Wharnys still plenty worth a trip even if its just a mooch around. Stick to the top of the crag for a good rocky xc blast over towards deepcar, some nice dryish flowing descents.
Or have a trip over the road from the main carpark into Greno woods, some nice runs in there and dosen't get as boggy as wharny :)

As said above - just take it easy out on your own and enjoy
