Would be Centaur for me but I prefer the looks and feel of Campag.
    Depends what's important to you?
  • I have centaur and would not swap them for 105's, gear changes are twice as fast.

Never used Centaur but 105 is smooth and I prefer the Shimano gear shift positioning, don't really like the Campag thumb lever thing

Let me put it this way

In 2004 I bought an Orbea with 105, which I still have

In 2007 I bought a new bike and had it fitted with Campag Centaur

The 2007 bike had to be replaced this year and the new one is 105
  • well its looking like 105 are the best option, i already have campag on my curent bike but its xenon and im not too impressed by the positions of the brake levers when on the hoods. think ill go for 105 silver heard black scratches!

Campag looks and feel nicer. Splash out on the carbon cranks if you can afford it! If you have a bike already there is probably merit in using the same make of drive train as wheels etc will be interchangable as will mechs. If your existing bike has the same no of gears everything will be interchangeable.

  • You have to ask ! Then you don't deserve Campagnolo !

There's just so much wrong about this comment....
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • I have Campagnolo on all my bikes, my hands find them comfortable to use.

Although I have DA 7800 on my bikes, I do think that Centaur looks so much better than 105 (and many of us like our bikes to just look good) and having had bikes with both, Centaur offers better functionality IMO.

See the number of threads with problems with 105 LH shifters.

To be fair, the problems with 105 shifters relate to the triple / double 5600 shifters when used with a double.

5700 105 is double and triple specific so should avoid any problems.

The new shape Campag ergos are completely different to the Xenons you have now, and the new Shimano STIs are also different to the older stuff. You really need to try them before buying!

If you like both, Centaur is nearly 200g lighter than 105, if that matters to you...

  • yeah i see what you mean about keeping the same drivetrain, think ill go have a look at them both and see which i prefer if both have changed. campag have got the upper hand been 200g lighter!

  • 200g is nothing, if your worried about that lose a lb off body weight (everybody has at least 1 spare, and thats 450grams!) :D

The new 5700 105 group is fantastic compared to the 5600. Make sure that is what you are getting. I cant believe how many new bikes are lurking around with 5600 on them.

Not much point asking us what we would have - we fight all the time over whats better Campag or Shimano. We'll never reach a decision.

I'd get whatever you fancy - but with a thought to - is it compatible with the rest of my bikes.

Neither are bad \ better IMO

    I started with Shimano Ultegra
then switched to Campag Centaur - I never really took to it - but in 8 years all weather riding it performed without fault. The shifting was more of a clunky feel - that some prefer.

Gone back to ultegra with my current bike. If you can't decide go with the cheapest. - they both work equally well.

I looked at Campag Athena and Shimano Ultegra for my build, but in the end have opted for SRAM Force. The Ultegra was going to get the vote until I tried SRAM. All this is irrelevant other than have you considered the SRAM Rival groupset?

  • yeah good point been lookin at sram lately and wondering how it compares to campag and shimano. goin to have a look around and read a few reviews i think

I've used both and prefer Centaur for the faster changes and better brakes (in my opinion). I've also found the lh shifting to be more reliable. I have nothing against Shimano, but would go for Ultegra over 105.

The biggest difference as you know is the changing method, if you like Campag then go Centaur...
