Hi all,

Can t believe this morning was icy already! Does ice on the roads pretty much make it impossible to cummute on a road bike?

Would any different tyres of even a mountain bike make any difference?

Cheers

  • I know what you mean Phil, I came off twice on my ride home this morning after my night shift. Landed right on my arse twice, would be funny if it warn t so painful, then you get dickhead car drivers piping there horns at you while your picking yourself up from the middle of the road (unbelievable!!).
Gonna be the car for me tonight and the MTB for the rest of the winter I think, I,ve rode the MTB in the snow and ice before and always been fine.
  • Less grip with mtb tyres by all accounts, keep as straight as you can, no sudden movements left or right, slow it down, take your junctions wider, less air in your tyres, avoid white lines, metal covers, after all that be prepared to land on your ass. :D

    But no it's not impossible.

    +1

    Plus....

Try to avoid very minor roads as they don't tend to get gritted as often (if at all).

Try to stick to car wheel tracks as the road is much less likely to be iced up still.
    More problems but still living....

If its really icey or snowy - I dont bother. Its not just you falling off - its other road users struggling to control themselves too.

At a push I'd go for the MTB though - just with wider tyres and let some air out of them. And my MTB shoes are a bit grippier than road shoes too.

    Hi all

Thanks very much for the responces. After a terrible ride this morning ive been on ebay and bought a cheap MTB. A Woodworm GXi?! I'll only use it for two months of the year but prefer to still be on the bike even if slow!

    Cheers
