Road cycling from Les Gets or Chamonix

Looking at a alpine summer holiday, will be going with the wife and want to do an activity holiday with some rafting, climbing, walking etc, but also want a few good days out on the bike.
Seem to be some good offers around in Les Gets and Chamonix, but are these good places to be based for road riding? Are any of the famous climbs near by?
The other option is Les Deux Alpes, but you've got to fly from London, but then you're near Alp D'Huez and the weather is warmer.
Would also be convienient if you can hire road bikes when we get there, although they are obviously very MTB orientated.
Any thoughts much appreciated!

Les Gets is up nr. Morzine/Avoriaz and you have the Joux Plane in that area as well as climbs out of the Sallanches valley (look at Google Maps). Chamonix has only one road thro' it which leads to Les houches and down into the valley or the other way goes onver the Col de Montets into Martigny (Switzerland)M.Rushton0

Les Gets no contest...
we had a weeks holiday there last year and it was fantatsic, loads to do. They keep the lift system open so you can hire mountain bikes and only go downhill as well !
lots of road cycling to do, climb up to avoriaz that the tour did last year, also the col joux vert. you can also go walking, sailing, canoeing, parapenting ... all sorts !
it even has a beach for the kids !0 -
Thanks for the replies.
What will the weather be like in June?
Dont suppose either of you travelled with Alpine Elements? They seem to have some mixed reviews.0 -
sorry no, I hired an appartment independantly and drove (3 days down, did it it 1 push on way back 794 miles !)
Weather should be lovely, hot and sunny during the day which can lead to thunderstorms around 6pm (which are amazing) as the heat builds up the high atmosphere.0 -
Les Gets area is a playground for road cyclists. I was based at the bottom of the Col de Joux Plane in July, TdeF passed very close by and up the Col de la Colombiere.
Beware, Internet research of temperatures might tell you it's mid 20s, when we there in July it was 36 degs C most days, and the locals told us it was always llike that.0
