Yet another tyre question

I have just taken delivery of a new road bike (my first in 30 years). It is fitted with Vittorio Zaffiro tyres (not the Pro). Man these things weigh a ton. I have also read some poor reviews re wet grip.

I am so out of touch with modern tyre tech on a road bike, can someone please let me have some suggested alternatives.

I live in the middle of nowhere so the roads are always wet in the mornings at this time of year, also mostly covered in leaves. I also weigh 18 stone.

I am looking for 700 x 23, good wet grip, good puncture resistance and light, or a best compromise.

Anything around I should look at?

You cant go wrong with either Continental 4 seasons or Continental Gatorskin. The 4 seasons seem to me to have slightly better wet grip (but more expensive)and both are pretty puncture resitant.
  • +1 for the Gatorskins

i use em on my winter bike, as punture resistant as anything else, pretty much, with good grip. everyone will have their favourites though.
    Go for the break

The answer is top-right on the page called "search" or scroll down a bit and you'll probably find a thread with the same questions someone asked about 2 days ago....

If you want to avoid punctures, for a big fella you should be riding 25mm minimum
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • @MarcBC, this topic has been mentioned sooooooooo many times, however that said the Gatorskins and Michelin Krylions have the thumbs up over and over again.

I ride with gators and the conti 4 seaons.25mm, ride at a slightly lower PSI
  • I went from Zaffiros to Open Pave and the difference in grip and rolling resistance was 10 fold. The difference in price was also noticeable but then I wsa willing to pay for a good tyre which just wouldn't stop gripping and made riding on horrendously surfaced country lanes and absolute pleasure.

Many thanks for the input fellas, greatly appreciated.

I went for 25mm Gatorskins from my LBS in the end. They too seemd to rate them highly.
