700 wheels too small for 700 tyres?????

I bought a new set of wheels from Decathlon today - nothing expensive but I was happy with them. Also had ordered some new tyres to go with them - Schwalbe Marathons.

So, I start to put the tyres and tubes on and find that the tyres and tubes seem to be an inch or so too big for the rim (wtf?!). Clearly they arent going to fit. Can anyone tell me whats gone wrong here???

This is what I have -

1. Wheels

Labelled as 28" 700C on the Decathlon wrapping. No other measurements given on the packaging.

On the rim itself there is a sticker that says -

ETRTO 622 x 13C

2. Tyres

The invoice from SJS Cycles says -

700 x 25 (25-622)

Around the edge of the tyre it says -

25-622 128 x 1.00 700 x 25C

3. Tubes

Continental. They say on them -

18/25 622-630

Now, have I bought the wrong tyres for my rims or are the rims some mad unusual size??

This seemed so simple not long ago when I was ordering everything. Today I'm so p*ssed off I could smash some furniture!

Any comments welcome...

Measure the diameter of your new wheels and compare them to some other 700c wheels ?
Or maybe try a different tyre ?

Sounds like it should all fit, can only think that maybe the wheels were marked up wrong? Have you got any others to compare them to?

Yes, I can compare them with the new bike's wheels but the sticker was on the rim in the style of one meant to be there permanently - not one that may have been mislabelled by a shop assistant.

Also, I bought 700C rim tape and that fits on the rims perfectly.
  • Welcome to the Schwalbe Marathon club, mate. Yes, they will fit, YES they are a bast'd to fit. Yes, it looks like they'll never fit. But if your wheels ate 700 and the tyres are 700 = will fit.

It took me nearly 2 hours to fit my tyres, which are exactly the same as yours. I was warned they would be hard but never realised just how HARD!

You could try smearing fairy liquid on the beads, but I'd suggest plucker up courage and take the wheels and tyres to a LBS as they have the tough tools for the job. Believe it or not, once the tyres have been sat on the rims for a while they are easier to take off and back on - LOL only by a bit.

I can believe it. Only the trouble is here that the tyres are too BIG not too small! Yet the figures say they should fit.

    Anyone tell me why???

Sounds very odd. So you can easily get both beads over the rims? Any photos?

  • LOL - Sorry, I just naturally assumed the usual Marathon problem of fitting.

OK, the Tyres and inners are OK. I've just looked at mine and wrote the following down.

    (on the silver reflective ring) 25-622 128 x 1.00 700x25c

My wheels are Mavic Aksium and are 622x15c

What's the circumference and width of your wheel?

Also, are they actually round and not oval.

The only indication of the wheel sizes that I have are as I've said -

622 x 13C on a sticker on the rim and the Decathlon packaging stating it was 700C/28"

The rims will sit inside the tyres easily with about an inch of clearance. I had wondered if this was deliberate and that the tube would somehow fill the gap, but no joy.

I'm going to take them back to Decathlon tomorrow and see if their workshop people can work it all out.

I had a similar problem - I tried them on and admittedly didn't persevere long - they just seemed far too big. But once they were on and the tube inflated - they fitted just fine.

just double checking... but you are trying to fit the bead of the tyre on to the rim arnt you? and not just sitting the wheel inside the tyre. sorry if you are but there is NO way if the wheel is 622 and the tyre is 622 that there would be 1" space between the tyre and the rim.

I'm not sure if it was the garage being cold and slowing my brain down last night, or if a magic pixy has shrunk the tyres for me overnight but they seem to fit ok now.

Sorry for wasting your time everyone

They're not folders are they? A lot of people get foxed by folders the first time they use them. Not having a bead means they rely on the tube being inflated to shape the tyre onto the rim.
