Recommending an LBS

Hi Guys,

Can anyone recommend a good LBS in the Aberdare area of S.Wales. The only 2 I know of are Dare Valley Cycles in Aberdare and Rhondda Cycle Centre in Treorchy. Has anyone had any experiance of either of these shops. Further afield theres Tredz in either Cardiff or Swansea, which I've always found alright.

My gear cable runs on the under side of the BB and it seems that on my last ride a rock has smashed the plastic "thing" that holds the cables to the frame. My gear cable is now flapping about wildly and consequently I have no working gears.

I basically need an LBS to get this sorted. Alternatively, does anyone know if this is an easy DIY job and if so where can I get a replacement plastic "thing" (anyone happen to know the name) and how would I go about replacing it?

Thanks all

Cheers

Yep, thats it. Turns out they're just cable guides, which I managed to get off the internet. Got to work out how to fit it now.

    Thanks for the offer.

  • Hi M8,

I'm sure the little silver bracket holds the plastic bit in place and the 2 tags on either end of the bracket keep the cables from popping out.

I'm sure it's all kept together with one screw or bolt.

If you look under your bike at the bottom bracket shell you will see a hole
this is where the bolt goes through.

The hole may be threaded in which case you will need to get the proper bolt ( correct thread )
You will also need to make sure that it does not interfere with the bottom bracket when you screw it in ie make sure that it's not too long.

If the hole is not threaded it may have been held in place with a pop rivet
If this is the case , you may get away with a self tapper screw.

If you use a self tapper just remember if it's an alu frame to go easy and not overtighting the screw.

I'm sure the ones that are riveted on are only found on cheap bikes.

If all else fails you can use a contact glue such as evostick or double sided tape and then once the cables are fitted they will hold the bracket in place ( this tip is on the forum by Nicklouse ) but would be better to screw it into place.

As part of your maintainance remove the screw from time to time to let any water out that may have got into the BB shell.

I don't think you will have any problems.

    Regards
    Archie.

Thanks, Archie. Luckly the screw that bolts the cable guide to the frame is still intact, it's just the plastic around it thats been smashed. Do you know if I'll need to release the tension on the cables before I can fit the new guide? If so, how do I go about doing this (sorry, It's not that I'm thick it's just I don't fiddle with things like this to often, but I'm willing to try most things as long as I don't need specialist tools etc)

    Thanks

  • You normally need to remove and re thread the cable as it has a slot in.

No special tools, my 06 hopper frame uses a phillips screw. Just undo the cable at the mech and take off the outer and make sure you refit a cable end once done.
  • Hi M8,

If the plastic bracket you bought is like the one in Chunkers1980 link (SJS cycles)
then it looks like you will have to re thread the cables.
This bracket although identical to the one I have has a bridge going across the 2 grooves
( Bridge is part of the plastic mould construction )
where the cables would run which means that you would have to thread the cables under the bridge.

The one I have just has grooves without the bridge.
It's the silver washer with the two square lugs at either end that act as the bridge.
This allows you to just lift the cables into the grooves without having to re thread them

You then put the screw through the silver washer and this keeps the cables in place as well as holding the bracket to the frame.

You might get away with filing the bridge away to allow you to just lift the cables into the groove then the screw you already have on your bike along with the tension of the cables should keep everything in place ok.

But I would check this out first before filing

    Archie.
