What's best for a clipless pedal virgin - I don't want to get something just because they're easy to get in and out of if it'll need replacing quickly...
I've heard some pedals squeak and I don't think I could be bothered with that!
Any suggestions greatly appreciated...
Cheers

I have the Look Keo Easy and Look Keo Carbon's.
The Easy and Carbons feel as easy to get in and out of - the Carbon has an adjustable setting to tighten the tension, although its lowest is [slightly] tighter than the Easy pedals. I have the Carbon on its lowest tension setting and have never unclipped accidentally. With the Easy's however, when sprinting hard, I've come unclipped out of the pedal a few times, but thankfully haven't come a cropper...yet!0 -
I got Shimano R540 SPD-SL pedals and Shimano R076 SPD SL Road Shoes having never used clipless pedals before. Bit of a knack to getting in first time but I manage it most of the time after only 500 miles on them.
No squeaking, comfy (once adjusted), not too expensive2010 Trek 1.5 Road - swissstop green, conti GP4000S

Are you looking at road-specific or just clipless pedals in general? Consider whether you plan to walk around in the shoes or not i.e. MTB shoes have recessed cleats make walking far easier. Downside is that they don't feel quite as positive or direct as a dedicated road shoe and pedal combo.
The easiest pedals for the user are probably Eggbeaters - simply stomp and go, no need to worry about pedal orientation.
Some people say the same for Speedplays - but their long-term reliability and expensive cleats count against them.
FWIW pedals with the squeaky reputation are Looks - but of the single-sided road pedals, they are still the easiest to use.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0 -
+1 for the Look camp were my first for road bikes and don't think I'd change other than to the Speedplay's.Pain hurts much less if its topped off with beating your mates to top of a climb.0

thanks chaps... think I'll plump for the easys - though will probably change my mind back and forward 10 times before buying anything...0

just to add my spanner to the works.. I wouldn't recommentd the easy's a friend had real probs with the fact that they were too 'easy' to unclip. I have the carbon's and the classic. i recommend thye classic simply fror preference as I like the clips to be relatively tight. my race bike and the TT bike they're tight my commuter they're less tight.http://twitter.com/mgalex

I've not had any problem with the Easys in terms of unclipping and that's over 1000s of miles - you won't unclip accidentally unless you tend to swivel your foot rather a lot when pedalling! £10 or so extra gets you the same pedal with the adjustment but I'd probably prefer to go to the Keo Max if spending more as the pedal body should last longer.
For commuting, I've recently taken the Easys off and gone to standard SPDs - £20 from Highonbikes complete with cleats. All metal contact surfaces and easier to clip in (double sided helps) - just press down on the pedal and wiggle your foot. Plus aforementioned easier walking. Won't be changing the Keo Max on my posh bike though.Faster than a tent.......0 -
Better Q factor with Time pedals, I would suggest.0
