Upgrading Pikes to Revelations

I've had my Marin Wolfridge since May and it has done me proud but I know it isn't the lightest beast and I'm thinking about updating a few things.

I've got all the contact points done bar the pedals. V8's will hopefully last out the winter.

What I am thinking of is wheels and fork. If I have time this week I am gonna weigh the wheels and work out if they are a sensible place to start. Probably looking at Hope Hoops (like everyone else, I know).

I have seen loads of deals on Revs only to find they are either QR or tapered head tubes.
I have however found a set of RockShox Revelation XX Dual Air 150mm for around £350, brand new. Is this going to be overkill.

Main place to ride is Peak District (Stageage Edge and the like) and a few trails, Sherwood Pines and Wharncliffe.

Cheers.

  • They'll be fine. Nice light forks at a good price.

You can also spacer them down to 140mm if you're worried they're a bit long if I remember correctly.

Seller says they come with lock out remote and spacers for 130, 140.

  • Happy days then.

That does seem very cheap though. Not being funny but are you sure that's legit?

    Ebay link for the forks.

I think with import tax and the like it might not work out as quite so cheap so will probably put me off. The warranty issuesn don't bother me too much. Not entirely sure whether or not to go for it.

If you are big, heavy and clumsy (like me) you may find the Revs rather twangy in comparison to the Pikes.

Revs definately aren't as stiff as Pikes, even with the maxle in. But they're still stiff enough IMO, I know that's a bit of a matter of taste but they've never done anything I don't like, they're stiffer than most forks out there. Just a natural tradeoff of long travel at low weight.

I love mine, they're amazingly light, stiff as they need to be, and superbly controlled (I've got the Teams with blackbox in it but even the motion control ones are decent). But there's definately still a case for sticking with Pikes on a bike like the Wolf Ridge... That said unless you're using it to ride mad things Revs will do the job lovely.

The biggest drop I'm likely to do is a couple of feet. I'm not one for getting huge air.

I'm not the slightest figure but at 14 stone not the heaviest either.

Don't get me wrong, the Pike 409 are great, going from the Kona with 110mm Bomber EXR? (think thats what it had) to a big 140mm travel full suspension ride has been crazy. It's just that as I'm trying to do longer rides, 30 miles plus, a couple of pounds here and there might not go a miss. The maxle rear and front seem to keep everyting nice and stiff.

THIS, most definitely. The wolfridge will be a sad bike if it has lightweight tangy forks on the front.
Sell it to someone who'll abuse it - it's what it likes - and buy a shopper bike or something for yourself

The wolf ridge is like the gimp slave of the MTB world, it loves being thrashed.

Revelations aren't too light for this job. They're just a bit less stiff than Pikes. But don't get carried away with it.

Believe me, it doesn't have an easy life, plus you have ditched the Pike for a set of Fox? It might be marginally more heavy duty than I need but I love the confidence it gives. I have no worries that I'm gonna break anything in a hurry.

But Pikes are also tougher - reinforced brace, steerer, crown and stanchions.

So, in conclusion. Less stiff than the Pike but still pretty damn stiff, more than enough for the reasonable level of riding I will be doing. Plus I am probably now looking at a set of Revelation Race rather than the XX.

Yep, Fox 36s on mine now. Far stiffer than the pikes, but more noticeable, is the better controlled damping.

Very true but again, doesn't make the revs weaklings- lots of things are weaker than Pikes, such as the forth bridge  It's the difference between tough and tougher rather than weak and tough IMO.

Indeed ;-). I once saw Steve Peat jumping on RS Jetts LOL!
  • I've got a set of Rev XX's on a 5-Spot...they work great, very plush. Great price there.
