This forum seems to have some reasonably well travelled folk and I'm off to Munich soon for a short break. Does anyone have advice on what is not to be missed when sight-seeing there? TIA.

The BMW museum, lots of lovely old cars :-) Never been, would love to go. (not so keen on the modern ones alas).

It's a remarkable building if nothing else, and yes the museum is interesting (provided you like cars and old plane engines!) The museum is one long spiral walkway inside, in chronological sequence, so at the start are the oldest things, then when you get to the top there's a display of the latest stuff.

Well, that's how it was when I visited many years ago.

BMW welt(world) is definitely worth a visit. A stuntman rides through the showroom at 11am & 2pm everyday on a motorbike (or he did last March when I visited). The BMW museum is very good if you like that sort of thing and you must go to Hofbräuhaus for a stein of lager. Visit the English garden & you must have a bratwurst in the daily farmers market, gorgeous(expensive too).

    It's a nice city - enjoy it.
Find your limits...and then exceed them frequently
  • Cheers for the replies. From what I've read the BMW museum was given a major overhaul a couple of years ago, I'm going with a friend though who has minimal interest in cars and I'd quite like to see the science museum too...not sure it would be fair for me to perusade her to visit both so there is a choice to be made there. Also would like to visit the pinakothek art gallery but looking through some guides it looks like there is quite a lot of stuff worth seeing, suddenly 3 nights there doesn't seem enough.
  • We have a sort of field trip there in April. We're getting dragged to the BMW place, and a bunch of other design/engineering places. The trip lasts three days, but pretty much everybody is staying for a week (one person is staying six days and a few are staying ten).

Obviously the only real reason anybody is going is to get dead drunk.
  • Science museum was great when I was there in 1989. Lots of hands on exhibits. Should still be worth a visit.

I went there for a long weekend in Feb 10. The following things are worth seeing:

Residenz Palace - Old royal palace stuffed with art and artifacts
Viktualienmarkt - Food market, bit like Borough Market in London, lots of tidbits to munch on and places to get beer and glühwein as you wander around
Marienplatz - Quite a pleasant square with big ornate buildings around and gardens nearby. Also the site of Hitler's Beer Hall Putsch in 1923, one of his attempts to push out the Weimar govt of the time
Neunschwanstein - The famous "Disney" castle outside Munich. "Typical" German castle with spires etc on a hill side. Bit hard to get to without a car though.
Beer Halls - There are loads of beer halls, I think Hofbräuhaus is the biggest. When I was there it had full on oompahpah brass bands playing in full regalia. It's massive. If you like big piles of German food (I love it) then get the roast pork knuckle (I think it's called Schweinshaxe). It's usually served with a pile of mashed potato, possibly other veg and sauerkraut. The pork is always perfectly soft with fantastic crackling. The perfect comfort food (IMO). Bavarian food is brilliant. The good places get very busy and loud though!

Actually a friend of mine who lived there and is often going back emailed me the following list of things to do:

    Things to check out
The following are in the town centre of Munich:
    - Frauenkircke (The Main Cathedral in Munich)
    - Marienplatz (The main town centre where there's the town hall)
    - Viktualienmarkt (Town centre market - Similar to Borough Market)
    - Langer Eugen (A church which you can climb to the top and see all of Munich which have views of the Alps)
    - Kaufingerstrasse (A trendy street for shopping)
    - Stachus (A square where you can go ice skating or have Gluhwien - German version of Mulled Wine)
    - Maximillianstrasse (Similar to New Bond St Shopping)
    - Odeonsplatz (A square with status and old beautiful buildings with cool cafes)

The following are outside of the town centre but still within Munich and easy to get to:
    - BMW World
    - English Gardens
    - Olympic Park
    - Duetche Museum
    - Walking along the Isar
    - Numphenbuger Castle

    Places to eat
Glockenspiel which is a nice cafe/restaurant that overlooks Marienplatz (A little touristy but quite nice).
    Cooperativa
Hofbrahaus - A beer hall which is very touristy but it's what Munich is also famous for
    Paulaner Brahaus
    La Bouch
    Bergwolf (for a curry wurst)
