shimano: worked perfectly on every bike i had and shimano saint is the sex. the brakes i rate highly, work well and feel nice. the cranks and BBs are some of the best on the market. hubs are good, i prefer hope hubs though. pedals are great too

sram: pretty colours but fragile and i just don't like them. also we could also put truvativ into this, and they are rubbish, hate the BBs and they don't last long and the cranks aren't as good as shimano. avid brakes are very good(elixir 5s are the best brakes i'v had so far) but they are not consistent when it comes to working and the standard pads are rubbish. great brakes though. not had a rock shox fork yet but soon i'll be using totems and after riding on my mates bikes they are really nice, but shimano don't make forks so can't really compare.

overall: shimano wins, in my eyes they have always been the ebst but sram have stepped up their game and these days it's 50:50 between the two

I actually couldn't care less what's on my MTB. They both work perfectly well, and I've used both happily over the years.

On my road bikes, I won't use Shimano because I hate the STIs. I'm intending, at some point, to give SRAM a try, but I'll probably still stick with Campagnolo for the ability to dump a load of gears in one go, in either direction. That's a big advantage when switching chainrings.
it's funny because you said STI

Shimano - because I've never had the opportunity to use SRAM.

Don't you mean Shimano for people who only ride in nice conditions? :p

    SRAM: Your mum.

    Shimano: Your dad.
  • Shimano: Works a treat despite my total abuse. Never had a problem with any of my three Shimano rear mechs.

SRAM: Only works when meticulously clean and doused in WD40. Clunky and agricultural. Shifters are gay. Both (100%) of my X-9 rear mechs have failed to function properly from new, despite lots of fettling by myself and the shop.
