2010 Exmoor Beast reviews

Apologies if I've missed a trick, but there doesn't seem to be much about this year's Exmoor Beast on the forum.

Did anyone take part and enjoy it? I did the 100 miler and thought it was great overall. The last 20 miles were a little unimaginative, but other than that it was all good.

Thinking about doing the Tour of Wessex now - I'd be interested to know people's thoughts with this one. Looks a toughy....

Yep note to organisers: this route sucks from Dulverton, Exmoor has so much more to offer, so why not get back up onto the moor rather than piddling about in circles the other side of Weddon Cross for 30 odd miles.
  • Also found the last 20 - 25 miles dull and boring with very few other cyclists about to ease the monotony. I'm glad I did it, tough event but one of those to tick off and do once.

The best bit was the sweeping, slightly downhill section next to the flowing river...unfortunately that bit wasn't on the actual course so was only enjoyed by those of us who missed that blind left-hand turn.

how did you get back on course?

we climbed back up through bampton and then took a left in bampton up towards morebath; an extra 6 miles and quite a climb - would have been home in about 5.50 without the detour so a bit disappointed, but it was an easy miss. when you think of all the marshalls who were on top of the moor at small, obvious junctions....

Myself and another guy did that climb towards Bampton then got cold feet on the directions (neither of us had a map) and just turned round and doubled back on ourselves - 8.5 miles over distance in total!

Three of us rode down to the 'big' Bampton/Tiverton junction and there was no sign, so we thought it had been taken, local knowledge led us to Bampton, when there were no signs in Bampton we knew we had gone wrong. So, again using local knowledge we took a left in Bampton towards Morebath, otherwise we would have gone very, very wrong. So I can see why you turned round and doubled back, not a nice thing to have to do!

and now I look at the map of the actual route - a 1 mile lane - and think DAMN!
