LBS has a set of DT Swiss Tricon wheels 1/2 price. I was about to order some Dura Ace 7850s, for the same money, which wheels do you think would be a better buy?

I know DT swiss are nice hubs, but the shimanos are a few grams lighter and all the reviews say they are a comfortable ride too.

Would these be stronger than Mon Chasserals, which seem to have a reputation for being a bit weak?

  • I bought a pair of DT SWISS TRICON wheels this year and I cant fault them. I live in Tenerife and the roads are shocking here , the wheels have took a good hamering and I have'nt had any problems.
  • The Mon Chasseral are not a bad pair of wheels at all, they have one (and only one) weakness

Problem with the Mon CHasseral is that the revolution spokes can come loose and then they break as they're fairly weak spokes. I have rebuilt mine with DT Competition spokes (about 40 pounds investment for the spokes) and now they are a robust and still fairly light wheelset.
The hubs are faultless and well sealed, after 7000 miles they still don't need servicing

I have both the Tricon and the 7850, one ride on the Tricon, many rides including 2 Etapes on the 7850.

Would go with the 7850 - never had a problem with them. Tricon front wheel went out of true on the very first ride and it has to be sent back to the distributor to be retrued, still waiting for the wheel back. I don't think you can get the tool to true the wheel yourself (the spokes have unique Torx nipples which supposedly help with stiffness but for which it is impossible to buy a tool to re-true the thing). So although the wheel is supposed to be easy maintenance (ha), if it goes out of true then there isn't much chance of getting it solved in a hurry - consequently I wouldn't want to take it on a trip for a major ride. It also has a weight limit of 90 kg
  • Hi Haynes, What'sthe name of your local bike shop? Could be interested in those.

Hmm if they don't release the truing tool I can't see them selling many, mind you I guess it's the sort of thing you only find out after you buy them :( Personally I'n not a DT swiss wheel fan (I like the hubs though) they always seem heavier and no more robust than their competitors.
