I'm looking at a new chain, Ive done about 2000 miles on the last one its creaking now (well I think its the chain) The creaking is driving me insane I been lubing it about once a week which will stop it for a few days.

Can anyone recommend a good chain for a rockhopper used for light off road and commuting on a railway track. I'm not sure how many miles chains are meant to last but I'm sure mine has been creaking for the last 1000 or so :?

Been plenty of threads on chains recently, worth searching them out.

Personally I like the buy cheap and replace often option ie the SRAM PC951

Sram PC951, PC971 or PC991. All the same performance/strength but just get shinier with the increase in price. I've just got a PC971 of ebay for £14. :D

Thanks £14 sounds good are the more expensive chains less creaky its been driving me mad. I toyed with new bike trying to stop the noise I'm pretty sure its the chain.
  • i dont know about less creaky, but my 991 is an awful lot less snappy than my pg951.

Do you actually clean and lube the chain regularly? :? If so then new chain but you'll probably need a new cassette too. If not, start learning, put something akin to a SRAM Powerlink on, take the chain off the bike regularly and give it a good clean with a degreaser and relbe with a good wet lube as the winter draws in.

991 and 951 are mechanically identical. the 991 is just nickel plated to make it look nicer.

Yep about every 100 miles the chain come off and spends a night in blanket wash then re-lubed never tried wet lube.. The cassette looks fine. The chaps at Evans thought it was the BB that caused the noise but why dose it stop when i clean the chain :?

they aren't though. 951 uses different pins to either of the other two and the 971 gets spill over plate design from 991.

wet lube is a good bet now the wet and mud that goes with it is drawing in.
