Have an iPhone I listen to on rides and am after a cover I can put it in to keep water out. Doesn't have to be iPhone specific, just nice and compact that'll keep it dry in my pocket and can have the headphone wire coming out.

Any ideas?

  • the aquapac ones are pretty good, mine has finally given up the ghost after 4 years or so, I'm sure they do one with a headphone port....
  • I just had a quick look on their website, they even do one with a proper headphone jack thingy and 100% waterproof headphones!
  • Or.....if you want to be a tramp......like myself lol!
I simply put my ipod/phone/electrical things, in a nappysack or dog turd bag......clean and unused ones ofcourse lol and tie them up, and where the knot is i find the heaphone wire fits nice and snugly out of there........just an idea
A bike is only as good as the rider!

How susceptible to water damage is it?
I've ridden for years with a Nokia in a pocket, in horrendous Conditions, and it's been fine.
  • Not sure it's particularly susceptible to water damage. Just thinking after my last wet ride I was soaked. I have this phone for the next 2 years and would rather not spunk £600 on a new one!

    Stick in your camelback?
Or, a sandwich bag. I used to keep my Fuji camera in one, and it worked a treat.
  • Slightly nicer than a poly bag for a few quid and free postage:

These would be no good, I use the Exped dry bags but for them to be waterproof you need to roll the top down 3 times which would eliminate the use of headphones
    It`s changed a bit since...

They are crap for getting water into - and once its in your f*****d - initially it totaly dies then eventually i nursed it back to health, 3 mnths later the back light has gone and its a real pain to use - I had insurance but as i was in Snowdon (where the phone got wet) with a broken phone i dint call them for nearly 3 days. Told my insurance was null and void as the claim had to be in 48 of the incident. V V annoyed.

Apple will replace my phone for £140 which ain't cheap but they don't have to and its a darn sight cheaper than a sim free one for over £300, once xmas is over i will be shelling out as i love my iPhone.

Kinda see your point, but when you've got something good you like why not use it? I look for a bit of protection for all my nice gear to make it last. Otherwise I'd have a load of great stuff at home in boxes whilst I use cheap stuff I never wanted!

Thanks for input - the aquapac thing with headphone jack looks pretty good.....

Well, you've given the perfect reason to not use it, because it's bloody expensive, and not fit for that purpose. As awesome as iPhones are, even though they have forever changed the course of humanity's destiny, they are not ideal for everything.
I have a good hifi at home, but it's not suitable for dragging around in the wet on my bike.

Or just use a water proof case? they are what £20? saves having a 2nd phone and all that hassel.
  • seriously

not cheap but actually works. That said there are some really good cheap waterproof mp3 players that might be a bit more sensible...

I have a similar item which I have used when cycling and surfing. No water gets in and adds a bit of protection to the device held inside.
  • Looks like the aquapac - That way I have my tunes, phone, camera with me all at once..... hell, I can even track my trail and send some emails
  • Use one of these

Got it for a couple of quid in TK Maxx
  • i just use zip lock bags! fits the phone in nigh on seals up with exception of the earphone cable, have put some clear tape around tthe edges as one split but is spot on!
used freezer bags before that, put phone in the top, seal as much as can and wrap the spare bag around it, couple of quid for 20!

This. If it's expensive and your worried of breaking it which can very easily given the riding conditions, why risk it? I bought a cheap MP3 for all my riding, and use my phone every other time.

Plus it helps save battery life on the phone while out riding. You never know, you could take a wrong turn that makes it much longer than normal to get back and have something happen because battery is dead.
  • iphones insurance wont cover water damage - they have sensors inside that go pink - so they know instantly (had experience of dead waterlogged iphone after a wet day at Haldon trail centre) these sensors have also been known to go pink from humid conditions as simple as a sweaty pocket so be warned!

have been using asda sealable sandwich bags ever since with the new one and bar actually dunking it its well up to the job and you can use the screen with fingers without taking it out of the bag. the top of the bags are sticky so mould well around headphone cables.

    . . . . . . . Any ideas?

When on your bike, concentrate on mountain biking . . . .

When at home, listen to music

Do you listen to music in the car? Watch tv while eating dinner? I quite enjoy the riding music thing
  • gotta admit, riding on my own, pretty much always have the tunes on, helps me concentrate on the riding! pedaling intime with the music and more often than not, end up riding faster than normal due to it!! iron maiden phantom of the opera and transylvania are Awesome singletrack songs!!
always have it so can hear the traffic, but can make a ride a lot more enjoyable!!

what about this for £20? You don't need to mount in on your handle bars, you can just as easily keep it in your pocket.

  • I picked up something from my tresspass shop a bit like this:

    http://www.waterproofcases.net/dry-pak- ... -case.html

Its not this but I can't seem to find it on the website. It is basically a thick ziplock bag with a built in connector that plugs into the headphone jack and 3 zips to help keep water out. Handily it also allowed iphone use whilst still in the bag. It wasn't sold as iphone specific.

I bought mine to take on a canoeing trip but I declined to test it actually was waterproof :-)

Try your local camping shop. They probably have something.

That is a great piece of kit if i was to ever need to road ride and use tom tom. Just the mount on the back sticks out for pocket use and the headphones need to be plugged in...
