Hi All, I hit my first car today because it was hidden behind another car and suddenly appeared out of nowhere. I would have dogged it if the road wasn't wet. ... anyhow, I landed on my knee and palm and didn't do any damage aside from the the throbbing knee pain I'm experiencing.

Is there anything I can use to reduce the pain?

    Sorry about your "off".

Try icing the area to reduce any swelling. Ibuprofen may help as an anti-inflamatory. Arnica is good at bringing out the bruising.

Ibuprofen - though make sure you take it with your food - it's not great for your stomach lining.
  • Rest. Ice. Compression. Elevation - plus ibuprofen.

    I'm trying to visualise this - but I can't.......

Passing a t-junction, car wants to turn right onto your road - a car turning left slips past it?
  • Yes, exactly. The other car should have waited for the other car to have moved out. I'm actually slightly traumatised by the experience and I'm thinking of putting the bike aside until the sun comes out. I didn't particularly enjoy my ride home because I became super cautious.

If I get ever get hit again, I hope the adrenalin keeps me going because the driver is going to get knocked-out.

    I'm glad I'm a very cautious cyclist.

Isn't that a simple case of 'driving without due care and attention' with the car waiting to turn right as an independant witness?

    Did you get the registration?

  • Sympathy. If your knee was hurting at 11am after a morning off, you'll be in agony by now. Good luck - painkillers - liberally applied - may be in order.
  • Well as long as your OK, but good for pointing out no damage a presume to the bike you meant!

Like others have said R.I.C.E. will do you go in a day or two, plus having a long soak in a hot hot bath always seems to relieve the aches a bit too.

Shame that you feel put off riding though, hopefully after a little while you will get back on the bike and tried to make this a positive experience. By that I mean that most drivers are not stupid just a bit ignorant and give them half a chance and the SMIDSY excuse comes out.

Last time I got knocked off my bike was only 2 miles from home after a great day out coming down a one-way street through the shops and some dumb drive in a rusty pickup (see what i'm doing painting a picture of a hick with no insurance and little care for other road users) cuts me up nearly pushing me into some parked cars. Then slams on the brakes whilst double parking (would add at this point that brake lights were not working) and as I swerve what do you know takes me out with his door. Yes I should have seen the door coming but was doing a massive swerve to get out of his way and trying to scrub some speed off at the same time. Anyway upshot is I'm off and half over the handle bars and thanks to being on my mountain bike at the time my trusty shimano SPD's with nice little studs in the front left a massive mark on the car. Now I could have owned up and told the guy about the damage to his truck...... but I thought balls to it after all he did seem that bothered about knocking me off my bike and as Karma would have it no damage to me and the bike only took a scratch to the side the spd.
Pain hurts much less if its topped off with beating your mates to top of a climb.

"I would have dogged it if the road wasn't wet. "

You sure it was your knee that was throbbing??

Just be careful if you do get round to making a claim; references to pulling out, coming out of nowhere and dogging could be misconstrued
