8 spd vs 9 spd front mech

I'm having a bit of difficulty with my Sora (3300) 8 speed front mech on my winter bike, and I'm about to have a little fiddle with it. If it can't be persuaded to work again, what are my options regarding buying a new one? Will a 3400 9 speed one work with an 8 speed chain/shifters? I know I could get a 2200 8 speed one but I can't find one with a 28.6 mm band-on fitting. Chainrings are 52/39, cassette is 25-12 if it helps.

the plates are a fraction narrower so it may rub a tad more than it should but that is all.

I found my old 3300 triple front mech a sod to set-up so I replaced it with a 9sp 105 model and that's a doddle by contrast.
