  • It sounds like you have just observed someone driving in an overly apologetic and courteous manner. I can see why you found it unfamiliar, especially from a 4x4, but swearing at them was probably an over-reaction.

  • When you said you tooted, you mean you have a loud bike horn you used...?

    And the driver said both:

"I didn't want to get in your way"

    and:

"You shouldn't cycle in the car park"

    ...?

Sorry, the report you have written needs more description to get a good feel of the event. It sounds like the old man was acting erratically.

So, you met a courteous driver, who was taking his time, probably expecting you to nip past him. So you blasted him with an air horn and then swore at his wife?

    Good work.

This is a stange thread
  • No, the Driver said I, "cyclists" shouldnt be in the car park, riding".

Much as this person dislikes cyclists

Ben Raworth loathes cyclists and wants to see them banned

    http://www.maxim.co.uk/blogs/staff/1723 ... lists.html

    and

    http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/ ... walkers.do

Reading the comments on the ''thisislondon'' link makes me think that all comments we read hereabouts that run along the lines of ''RLJers set a bad example'' make virtually no sense because the need to scapegoat the cyclist - to portray the cyclist as RLJing self-righteous self-proclaimed green, law-disregarding pedestrian bully - will continue even if we all were, and continued to behave like, street saints.

We need to understand the need to scapegoat cyclists first. Pedestrians believe we belong to one side, drivers to the other, and both groups know in the end that we cause little harm compared to heavier motorised vehicles; and yet the clichés persist. And they will continue to persist - there's a fundamentally different approach to danger and road use between cyclist and driver. And I think we need to look at these differences very carefully before we can begin to understand it.

Jeremy this is truly a bizzare post. I'm going to attempt to recap on the events.

You were leaving a car park by bike.

Someone in a 4x4 reversed out in front of you, must have seen you at this point and stopped. I think it's fair to say he was expecting you to nip past him here, but you said "What are you waiting for!" to which he made his way to the exit.

There he waited again. Hard to say without knowing the layout why he did this, but it sounds like he was expecting you to pass him again? So you stopped for 15 seconds (a long time!) then 'tooted' at him with your air zound (which is clearly louder than the word toot would suggest).

His wife asked what your problem was, and you replied "You. Why stop?"

He gets out of his car and says he didn't want to get in your way (what an awful man!).

Then there is a WHOLE MINUTE of waiting (I assume he gets back in his car in this time?) during which you just wait behind him, then swear at them both?!

Even at this provocation you yourself point out they did not swear back at you, but said you had a filthy mouth.

I think you've proved your point that cyclists are inferior to drivers. It sounds like he was just trying to let you pass. Slightly over the top for him to wait so long but no excuse for your actions. Why you would decide to tell us all about your behaviour and expect sympathy is beyond me.

I seem to recall from your previous posts that you always ride with a helmet cam. Why not post the clip to clarify exactly what happened?

He sounds like a right bully if you ask me.

I'm sure a search on the internet will lead you to some helpful websites if you need support, Mr Rundle.

No, that was a strange driver, as far as I can tell.

+1. I somehow suspect the camera will either have been "not working", "forgotten" or "turned off" at the time or something similar.
  • Ah, click ding. OP has edited his post's hasn't he.

I am completely baffled by this thread

I can't find the original report which seems to have been edited out but from others response its seems to me that you had a courteous driver who waited for you twice and you responded by shouting at his wife

Just because you're paranoid it doesn't mean they're not out to get you
