Turbo Trainer Recommendations

HI All,

I wasn't sure whether this should go in this or the Fitness section, so apologies if I opted for the wrong one......... :?:

I'm a nancy; fair weather rider and have decided the current conditions are far too treacherous to risk taking my pride and joy out in, so I'd like to invest in a Turbo Trainer to keep myself ticking over during the Winter Months.

I just wondered if anyone had any recommendation as I don't know too much about them.....

I've read some good reviews about the CycleOps Mag Turbo Trainer and it seems to be very reasonably priced so this is my current front runner, but as ever your valuable input and advice would be very gratefully received! ! ! ! ! :D:D:D

Many Thanks

Mat.

I have a Cycleops Mag Trainer. The most basic version with adjustment at the rear dropout.

Plus points: Cheap, well built, folds up small, can get resistance pretty high if you want.

Minus points: Pretty noisy when doing intervals (think washing machine spinning).

Also I notice the clamp pushes on my derailleur loop and slightly puts out my indexing (but this is a miinor grip - I could adjust it with half a turn but don't bother).

I usually leave it on the middle resistance setting and use my gears to give me a work out.

  • Hi Chris, thanks for the feedback I'll bare that in mind......

Hi Scrumple, a quick search has highlighted that emphasising your point has been something of a personal mission for you. So consider me educated...... :)

    Thanks both! ! ! !

People who have been using the internet 10 years don't need to search
  • I have the cycleops fluid 2 and can`t recommend it enough, no slipping, pretty quiet and a good hard workout.

  • Hi ShutUpLegs, thanks i think........... :?

Hi Golfergmc, Thanks for your input I've read a lot of positive reviews for the Fluid 2! ! !
One of my main reasons for getting a TT is to get in an early morning work out before i go to work at about 6.00 am. Therefore noise is a major conern for me, would you say i'd be able to perform a work out down stairs without waking my girlfriend upstairs? ? ?

I know this is a rather ambiguous question and subject to a number of additional factors, i'm just trying to get an idea of the amount of noise it generates! ! ! !

    Many Thanks....

    What's the budget?

I have used a Tacx Sirrus Gel for a couple of years. It's pretty smooth , has a resistance adjusted lever you attach to your bars and is very quiet for the money, I hink you can still pick them up for £130 or less.

Nap D has a mega thread on all things turbo. Well worth a look with a coffee in hand. About to join the Great Sweating Army myself.. after knee surgery. I got a Tacx, but all the bigger boys swear by the Fluid 2. Noise is relative.. but by all accounts most sound like a jet engine. 8)

I have and can recommend the Tacx Sirrus Gel , good price and does what you need it to.

You say the current conditions are far too treacherous, winter hasnt started yet!!!
Turbo is good but try and still get out, there will be days when its fine in Autumn and winter, there will be cold but sunny days and these are smashing for getting out on the bike
I can understand avoiding days of extreme wind, ice rain etc or the fact thats its dark so early and night riding isnt your thing. Then the turbo is a good back up.
It will be a long few months if you only use a turbo between now and Spring.
