All righty then - a rather dull Friday here and I need some insipration. What would you say to a middle-aged bloke whose get up and go got up and went ?

Usual story - full of things I'd like to be doing, but no energy and no time and most of all no motivation to make it happen.

I suspect I need some couch time with a shrink to discover just what it was my mother said to me that has turned me to this feckless, lazy, good for nuffink, but failing that, what do you suggest ?

Good thinking - cos you know, I may just have been "a very naughty boy"

I got my own individual personal trainer a few years ago. I do two daily outdoor sessions with him, which have made an enormous difference to both my physical and mental health. Every single day, whatever the weather - mostly because he's just so massively enthusiastic, but also because if I don't, he'll crap in the hall.

Once you're a middle aged man, even if the wife and kids are very fond of you, a dog is your only chance for genuine adoration...and even if it's only from a dog, it's a heck of a boost to be adored.

Man's best friend as the antidote to middle-aged invisibility.

You may be on to something there. And there is something about the "in all weathers" aspect which is particularly fortifying, as I recall from the days when I used to get out on the MTB before the family got up at weekends "in all weathers"

Problem with the dog suggestion is that, if you get one like mine, the fat little ba****d won't go out in the rain - it just puts the anchors on, locks out its legs and dips its head to the floor so that you end up dragging the bugger round! Then you both go back to the couch with a beer and a packet of smackos and the circle of de-motivation continues.
  • I suggest you find a woman who, in the words of Willie Nelson, can suck the chrome off a trailer hitch. OR: take a shedload of vitamin D AND get some daylight lightbulbs and stare at them for 15 minutes at the start and end of each day AND start meditating. But the first option will sort you out.
