Hip fracture after fall off bike

Time has been short for me lately so I was pleased to plan a 50mile route with a friend at the weekend. 6 miles into the trip he came off his bike when going into an unknown bend slightly too fast (probably only 16mph but downhill and sharp bend, greasy road) and result = hip fracture. Poor fella.
Anyone else had experience of hip fracture in healthy person coming off? Seems pretty unlucky. I think his foot stayed cleated-in with bike attached.
He has a long recovery period ahead but he says he is gonna ride that stretch of road again when fit.
ps - He was chuffed that the bike was hardly scratched - , a lovely Cannondale six.
