Tax, or "Thieving ********"

I had a job with Halfords, but had to leave quite soon due to a problem with my joints. Unfortunately, I'd been put onto an emergency tax code, and the pay I received was taxed appropriately. This is fine, I understand the reasoning for all this, not a problem.
However, I've just phoned up to reclaim the tax I paid, as if it was using my proper tax code, I should have paid nothing. Here's where it gets trickier. In Summer 2009, I helped with an open day at University, which I was paid £15 for. The University put me onto their payroll system, meaning that it's simple for me to be paid if I help with another open day or something. Unfortunately, this means that HMRC see me as being employed, and so won't give me the tax refund in the normal way until I can produce a P45 from the University, which would mean I couldn't do any other open days.
There *may* be a way of fecking around with the tax codes so that I reclaim the money from the University (as they're my current employer, apparently) and they then get it from HMRC, but it's still a complete ball-ache of a process which will mean it's at least 2 months before I get my refund.
I am annoyed.

What a wank system!
Halfords put me on BR1 code too, knew nothing about it back then. Luckily I lived 10 mins from the tax office, so just walked in with my payslips and got a nice cheque in the post a few days later.
Isn't summer 2009 in the previous tax year? Cannot see how it would effect your claim for this year.0 -

I was fairly sure that the PAYE system (which is used by the uni and Halfords) would tell them how much I've earned, but apparently not...0 -
Yeah, that's the whole point of PAYE!0

All you can do now is wait until 5th April 2011 then go to your local tax office with your P60's or P45 and reclaim your tax. If you start working anywhere else you can ask to fill out a P46, although you'll still pay tax on everything you earn (able to reclaim as above) come the 6th April the employer should remove the week 1 status so you don't get over taxed. Contact the University and ask them to complete a P46 and declare it's your second job so you pay BR but this will allow you to use your tax coding on your main job utilising your income tax allowance to the full. Again if your total earnings are below your tax allowance (currently £6475 per tax year) you can reclaim all your taxes back.0

Mr. Taxman robbed me of almost 600 last year when I still lived in the U.K.
I hate when they don't do their job properly.0 -
Have I ever mentioned that I pay very little tax?
