I am replacing the forks on my road bike. I am having a problem with the new 1 inch forks in that after the crown race there is a step up to the fork steerer for about 20mm . This is hitting the inside of the lower headset. I am using an older Campag headset. Anyone else had this problem. Maybe the depth of the older Campag headsets were thicker??

Firstly, are you sure your fork is only 1" and not 1.125"? Have you manged to fit the crown race to your new fork? Check the fork steerer diameter - you may have JIS rather than ISO standard which is slightly bigger. Check out SheldonBrown.com.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • Definitely 1" but the fork steerer says 27?? Is this the JIS spec? I have taken it all to a shop so I dont mash it!! Prob a new headset (I can use the old one on turbo trainer bike) What a palava for a small job!

JIS crownrace seat is 27mm dia whereas ISO is 26.4mm - I have filed one down in the past.
