sort of contradicting myself here as i usually do perform this ritual however.......
when you go for a spin, not only ensure you have a spare tube with you ( p - word) it's also a good idea to check it. went out other day, luckily (or unluckily whichever way you look at it) i p'd about 3/4 mile from home, deciding it not worth repairing at roadside i walked home.Later when i went to repair it i discovered the (new) tube i had been carrying with me had a 1cm split in it, just as well it happened when it did, could have been a long walk

Was it a new tube? What brand btw? Or had you used it before?

I find wedging them with other things in saddle packs usually causes rips

Take some patches too - they take very little space and not much more time once you got the wheel off and old inner tube out.

I have found old innertubes cut up are very good for wrapping around new ones. Not only does it protect them but it also compacts them so they fit into a small saddlebag with ease.

I wrap mine in barbed wire. Protects them from sneak attacks.

A spare tube? What's wrong with carrying 3 (or 4 when ridng audaxes
    or sportives)?

A lady on the Upper Thames Audax ride had multiple punctures today. I felt sorry for her
(up to a point because, as she was pretty, there were several willing male volunteers to
ready to help her out  ). I did see her getting her mending a puncture in the cafe
though. Very strong rider she was.
