Hi, when do you folks decide to put on gloves? E.g., weather report says 10 c, do you put them on or just use mitts?

12°C or less, but sometimes end up taking them off. Depends if I'm doing a flat day or hilly day. If there is a lot of downhill bits - it tends to get the hands a little colder!

When the "feels like" ie wind chill accounted for is below 8.
None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.

we all feel the cold in different ways - why don't you decide for yourself..?
  • all the time, long fingerless is as cool as I go, I suffer from cold hands tho
  • No idea about the numbers but am wearing them for my rides now. Would rather my hands were too warm than cold & slow to the brakes as has happened before

Silly answer, but, when it feels cold enough.

I went out on Sunday, it was 10-11C and I'd got my fingerless mits on. I was just feeling the chill, but it wasn't a proble. Much colder and I'll probably wear my winter gloves.

That said, I wear full finger gloves all year when I'm on my mountain bike, but that's more for protection, so I'll put up with hot hands.

I put gloves on when I was too cold the previous day. I've no idea what temperature that is though.

    +1

On Sundays club run i was the only one wearing mitts, everyone else had gloves on. General consensus was i was right , it didn't feel too cold so i put mitts on. :)

  • When I go out for a ride and my fingers feel cold. Next time I'm out, I'll be wearing gloves.
    Same with my overshoes.

That's my general rule. But I had no idea that it was going to be as mild as it was today - sweat almost welded my gloves to my hands - so it doesn't always work.

I put my winter gloves on today without even thinking what I was doing. It was about 14 degrees. I got a mile down the road and realised what I was wearing.

I don't use a thermometer, but usually all year, just like my leg warmers and arm warmers, all year. Unless I'm racing or going full speed up a hill.

Lucky you. I got absolutely soaked coming over the A62 from Hudderfield to Manchester today. 10ft visibility, what felt like 40 mph headwinds and cold rain in my face. Worst conditions I've cycled in ever.

I like the feel of my handlebars, so tend to put up with the cold for a while, then go straight to full winter gloves once it gets too much.

Generally I just sit at the front or go faster if i'm underdressed.

If you start in the morning, often it'll only be an hour of chilliness, and then you'll be fine.

Whenever I need to hide the needle marks of course
  • I run pretty hot even in winter, so can get away with thin gloves even when it's Baltic.

Yeah, guy I know is like that. Also rides a motorbike year round in shorts and sandals, no socks, rain hail or shine. He's "solid", too.

Dumb as a bag of hammers, mind you, but nobody would tell him that to his face.

Not temperature dependant, I wont ride without.

The last time I got knocked off not wearing any I was picking grit out of my palms for weeks, and there is nothing more annoying than having your palms all scabbed up.

Gloves are a minor inconvenience in comparrison
