Alcohol can be more dangerous than heroin and cocaine

... screams the News at Ten headlines. Well yes, 20 pints of stella will hurt most people more than a infinitesimally small piece of crack. Guess the scientist needed some funds and wanted to be on TV.

In tomorrows news:

On a serious note, it was related to the amount of overall harm caused, including social costs.
So as many more people drink than take crack, the total 'cost' of booze is higher.
Listened to one of the authors this morning who made it clear that if half the population were permanently whacked on heroin and meth, the result would obviously be different.
    Context.

Yeah, the actual piece itself was better, but the headline certainly grabs attention!

So a drug consumed by 30 million people causes more harm than one consumed by a few hundred thousand?

In other news, more people die in the home than on the top of Mount Everest.
You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.
  • Lol yup but you have to look at it in relevance to some of the other drugs in the listing.

Like Good bit of Marjuana (where is my spell check at work lol) which is known to cause less dmg than alcahol. Its just pointing out that the laws in place are not hugely based in fact, just random opinion.

in what way is dope known to cause less damage than alchohol ?

I have two friends that both have serious psychological problems after smoking dope for years. Scientists have gone on record as saying that the more they find out about dope and how it intereacts with the brain, the more they realise just how little they know

given that it is smoked most of the time, usually with tobacco, i would argue that it is easily as damaging as alchohol

Maybe in detrimental health effects to the user, but social costs are relatively low compared to alcahol.

How many stoners go out and fight for the fun of it. How many stoners have agression problems which get released when they smoke, and the end result is them kicking in car mirrors at 3 am. How many fatal accidents do you hear of caused by stoners, and how many by alcahol?

How much does it cost society to treat and house someone with incurable mental problems ?

One of my friends had a protracted stay in hospital when he had his first breakdown, and has been in and out ever since. He is now housed in sheltered accomodation and lives off benefits as he is unable to work.

My other friend doesnt live in sheltered housing, but cant work because of his illness, and so lives off benefits

WIthout a doubt, that is a pretty high cost to society

Dont get me wrong, i agree with several of your points, but i dont think that dope can be said to be any less damaging than alchohol

i should highlight that i smoked dope for around 10 years, giving it up when it started to make me paranoid all the time - just so you dont think me some Daily Mail reader

Point is did the dope cause your friends problems, would they have had them anyway?
Or did they smoke because of their psychological make up?
Or would they have been alkies if no dope available?
Know many, many people who have smoked for decades (I'm almost 50), some are a bit laid back, but non are nuts, or unemployed for that matter.
    Doesn't prove anything neither.
Point of the study was that alcohol, being very widely used, is a huge cost to society (est in study was £1,000 per taxpayer per year) and that the results should be used to best determine where to spend public money to get the most cost effective results.

well its hard to say what they would have done if they hadnt had these problems

general consensus from the docs involved is that their drug use triggered their illnesses

im not disagreeing with the points in the report or what you are saying, more that there is a perception that dope is "safer" when its clearly not
  • I challenge the scientist that conducted the study to down a Pint of Stella then a Pint of Smack.

No reason really, just thought it'd be funny. It'd make me larf anyway!

Thing is, it sounds like you're looking at extreme cases. I'm guessing your mates got stoned pretty much every night, and more than likely during the day as well, right?
And they smoked until they were completely blitzed?

Try doing that with alcohol, and see if the results are any different.

Used in moderation, on occasions, and not to excess, neither of them are a major problem, but when consumed in, frankly, idiotic quantities, they'll both destroy you.
  • Isn't that the case for almost everything? Everything but fresh air in moderation....

    True.
But what I'm trying to point out is that in pretty much all of these cases of someone needing to be sectioned because of cannabis, they were smoking vast quantities.
I know tons of stoners who smoke it every day, every night, and live in a permament state of being stoned. They, are frankly, a bit messed up in the head.

I also know others, who are sadly rarer, who might have a spliff on the weekend or so, who are fine, and show no signs of mental health issues, even after 30 years+ of smoking it.
  • I've said for years that if alcohol was a modern drug it would be illegal.

Just walk through any town centre on a Saturday night and look at the chaos it causes!

In my case drinking too much booze and taking too much acid meant I was found in a goat pen... doing something "inappropriate".
Seriously though most drugs are great, that;s the problem
