can`t find a total ascent for it ? but reckon there is tougher 200k audax`s out thereconstantly reavalueating the situation and altering the perceived parameters accordingly0
-
The link to Mapmyride (for the 100M) shows 6,000ft (2,000M) of total climbing but I am not sure about the way they calculate total ascents. I have read somewhere that the Exmoor Beast is supposed to be 10,000ft of climbing but I mapped the route on Mapmyride and it came out at 6,000ft too.
Looking at the elevation profile of Le Terrier, I think there will be some sportives tougher than this one (not that I have done them).0 -

don't think it was a "question"
more of an advert
wake up you lot ! Can't you spot a new poster after some publicity!! Why are you all insanely arguing with the OP? Missing the point... !0 -
Read this earlier and it was obviously a shameless plug. Still it worked for me and I may even do it as I havent done any of these roads before.
Totally ignored the hype around the 'hardest' tag as I reckon there a few that I have done that could claim that title but its not this!!Brian B.0 -
Agree on the advert/plug reply.
Fred Whitton, Dave Lloyd challenge or the dragon ride would be just as tough if not tougher.0 -
For the unbelievers. Speak to some of the riders that rode the previous long distance of 77 miles, rated a 9 for difficulty. That was slightly easier the The Fred but harder than The Etape. Its not just all about ascent, this ride will give you no rest, groups will be rare.
I don't really understand the figures on mapmyride either, they split ascent in 2. Last years ride had in excess of 2,600m ascent measured with most Garmins. Also some of the roads near the finish aren't on their map, so will not be measured. We have added 25 hilly miles to last years ride.
As for a plug. Your spot on. We would like to fill this ride (400) without spending a fortune on advertising so that we can give more money to our charities. We tend to get overshadowed by our bigger neighbours (The Fred & Etape) but this is trying to set new standards.
There are lots of photos to have a look at the terain.0 -
No problems with the plug. How else are we supposed to hear about changes to events, particularly those that are slightlylower profile. Having spoken to people who have done the 77 miler , all said it was extremely tough, with relentless steep climbs one after another. My guess is that it will be right up there. I have also heard nothing but favourable comments about the event's organisation.
Its on my list for next year, after the Fred Whitton and before a trip to France to ride the Raid Alpine.
Roll on 1st January when I will get my entry in!0 -
It does look very good. Why have you put it on the same weekend as the Biggest sportive in the country, The Dragon Ride?0

Decided that I am going to do this next year and see for myself. The toughest day out I have ever had was probably the original Dave Lloyd mega challenge with all of its 140 hils with a lot of climbing.
After this on the Fred Whitton, Hardknott at 100miles is very hard - although I managed it this year better than ever. Terry Bells CK was also very tough - equally as tough as the fred.
Personally I find all sportives very tough as I generally push myself as hard as I can and have never done a easy sportive.
Good luck with the event YoungdogBrian B.0 -
If you're running something good, by all means get on a forum and shout about it. Only think about reaching out to people, being ready to help and answer questions, rather than pretending to post sneaky messages.0

One is in the north of England, presumably appealing particularly to folk in the north of England, north Midlands and Scotland.
The other is in Wales presumably appealing particularly to folk in Wales, the south Midlands and the south of England.
Don't see that there's any issue there.More problems but still living....0 -
Firstly, Brakelss. We put it on that weekend as we have our HQ booked and it works well with other cycling events locally. We don't seem to hear the The Dragon is a better event than ours and the fact that we wouldn't want huge numbers riding our event. It is not the sort of thing that we would want, with litter, crowded areas. Our ride is for more of a purist.
Vorsprung. Sorry that you dont believe me. Anyone could make a mega ride. Some from our Club rode to Scaborough and back in the day- 260 miles in 1 day.
Brian B. You will be able to let me know if it's harder than The Fred.It will be a pleasure to meet you. My details are on the website.0 -

Our ride is for more of a purist?
Please explain how a rider in one sportive is more of a 'purist' than a rider in a different sportive.0 -

I travel all over if there's a good event. I live in London and did the Fred Whitton and Dragon last year. There may well be people like me who do a lot of sportives who would ride both of these events if they were on different dates.0 -

Nice attitude you've got.0 -

That's incredible! 260 miles in a single day! who'd have thought it possible??!!!??0 -
Why have we got the negativity on this thread? Someone is putting on an exciting sportive on roads which don't feature on many others. The calendar is pretty crowded now so its more important to avoid clashes with more local events than those which are further away.
I've ridden and enjoyed the Dragon Ride twice, the Fred Whitton twice and also the Etape du Dales. If Young dog feels that his event is more for the purist than the Dragon Ride, why shouldn't he say so? I know the Bowland Fells very well and I would tend to agree with him with regard to his claim. We also get the usual sneering remarks from Audax riders who can't bear the idea that sportives are a valid alternative, and are perhaps felt to be rather less cliquey.
If you are not interested in the event, don't bother reading the thread.
I am really looking forward to riding Le Terrier, paricularly as it is now in the 100 mile + bracket.
I will try to spread the word round Kendal and get a few of my friends riding as well.0 -

I think the way he initially posted has got people's backs up...0

I don't think this is a big deal! I suspect that you see 'purist' as an elitist remark.
To me the Bowland Fells are special partly because they are not very well known. The roads are quiet and the climbs don't feature on many people's checklists. They have a real wilderness feel to them. I suppose the fact that this is a low key event, means that few people are going to ride it for 'bragging rights', but rather, because they want a hard day out in wonderful landscapes. In that sense Le Terrier is more likely to appeal to 'purists' who perhaps don't want all the razmataz that attaches itself to events like the 'Dragon Ride'. I say this as someone who really enjoyed both my 'Dragon rides'.0 -
Brakeless.
I am sorry if I have upset anyone with how I started this thread. I have not meant any offence. We do not have much spare money to advertise as we give all our profits to charity.
When I speak of purist, I mean. That we have the 2 long routes that do not go on any A roads, there are no traffic lights (unless temporary), the roads are very very quiet, there is very little easy riding in groups as you will find that you are generally either going up hill or down hill for, we will never have more than 400 riders, it has a unique finish (like no other) and is a great ride run by Lancaster Cycling Club for cyclists.
Hope you come and ride. [/u]0 -
I can't see the overlap with the Dragon either - that's one of the biggest events, very popular and at the easier end of the scale, run in South Wales and attracting people from South Wales and also Southern England.
If there is a clash, it'll be with the Polka Dot/Spud Riley, which is also up in the NorthWest on that date...0 -
Sorry Garz, but your so wide of the mark. It could just be posssiible that he has heard good reports about the ride and that he likes the area.
The reports will come out showing whether I am right on June 6th 2011.
Hopefully you will be one of them.0 -
Any well run sportive is going to be on my hitlist young dog. It's a shame on the tact of how people post on forums I guess.
You see that laughing smiley.. some of us have a sense of humour!0 -
Interested in this one - how much is entry and is the route easy to follow and/or very well signed ? I don't mind avoiding A roads but personally I don't like sportives where you are forever looking out for the next turn.
it's a hard life if you don't weaken.0 -
Garz wrote:NapoleonD wrote:I think the way he initially posted has got people's backs up...
Agreed. Then getting his mate Nickwill to post for backup tipped it for me..0 -
Tom Butcher.
It is very well signed and is basically anti clockwise which means that most turns are left(with the flow ). It is a highly rated sportive by the people that have ridden it. Quite a lot have ridden all 3.0
