Broken Nose Breathing Issues!

Hi,

Bit of an odd one this.

I've broken my nose 3 times. I say 'I' - A pavement broke it once, my knee broke it once and this nice bloke in a nightclub broke it once too. As a result, my right nostril is smaller than the left and, if you study it, it's slightly wonky in general. It doesn't bother me aesthetically (there are bigger issues to contend with!!) but I'm wondering if it restricts my breathing.

My sense of smell is poor in comparison to people I know - "Can you smell gas?" - Ste - "no" - friends pass out.... etc... My breathing is always far easier through my left nostril.

I don't remember a time when I've been able to ride with any real effort breathing solely through my nose - I'm not sure if this is normal, should I be able to get enough air into my lungs without opening my mouth?? I have a half-respectable level of fitness, I cycle 30 miles a day, kept up on club runs, been up Ventoux without coming too close to death, etc...

My girlfriend is a doctor and the whole idea popped into my head as she'd referred someone to have their nose reset - although in that case more for appearance than practicality. She reckons that because I've never had it reset any of the times it's been broken I'd stand a good chance of getting it done - but I'm curious to know how abnormal (if at all!) I am before I start committing to general anesthetic and looking like I've been fighting!!!

Sorry for a vague post, just wondering what's 'normal' and if anyone else has encountered this kind of thing??

  • Mind's been similarly abused, the kids love that they can squidge it into my face. I had my upper cartilege reset and the entrance to my sinuses widened. The op wasn't so bad but taking the Wadding out and the plastic splints was the single most unpleasant experience of my life. It's helped a lot though. And I use breatheright strips of I have a cold

I've never been able to breath through my nose during sport. I've never had my nose broken but I had the cartilidge down the centre of my nose thinned but it never helped it just stopped the ear ache.

Personally I wouldnt worry about it.
