Number of bicycles in UK

I don't know about in the UK, but there are 9 million bicycles in Beijing - allegedlyWant to know the Spen666 behind the posts?

There are more cycles sold in the UK than cars. according to the DfT, in 2009 there were 3.5m bikes sold in the UK compared to 2.9m vehicles. With 1.9m of vehicle sales being cars. (source BBC news)
There are around 3-3.5m cycles sold in the UK per year:

Although I saw a report in a magazine earlier in the summer that suggested that only around 5m (from memory!) are in regular use - so I assume that there must be some pretty full garages and sheds around!
