New, getting first proper bike today/soon

hey there, i'm Will / Barnsey
i'm getting a new bike soon as my old BMX from when i was 12ish (you know that stage?) is being repaired and rebuilt etc. and i wanted to get away from the tiny frame and wheels.
i was thinking of getting a jump bike as i recently stumbled upon a huge dirt track complete with huge jumps/tabletops etc. and i was in awe. however i doubt i'll survive my first attempts at navigating it :P
so, back to the point, i've been down to see this guy who has thousands of bikes, he gets them from the police, auctions and the like. i've had a look round and i've seen several mountain bikes but no jump bikes as such, however he said he'd build one for a relatively low cost as he can get parts cheap.
i was wondering what a good starting bike would be? (by that i mean the frame size (i'm 5ft 10 and pretty heavey :P), wheel size, brakes, forks etc.)
i doubt i'm fooling you with my fake knowlage of the subject :P
so any help with anything, bikes, builds, parts, tuts, beginner FAQ's would be great

Hi and welcome to bikeradar.
Size is a personal thing - impossible to say what bike will fit you, as one bike may differ from another, even if listed as the same size.
Most jump frames tend to have a lot of standover height, and are reinforced. Similarly with the wheels and parts.
I'd visit a shop first and have a look at some jump bikes for an idea.
Park Tools has a good website for mechanics: also check out our FAQ.0 -
well i'm a rugby player, i weigh 14 stone :P, muscle not fat.
i've been browsing the forums and i've seen some of the trials stuff, and i would love to get into that, but starting with a jump bike is okay right?
so i should go to a shop rather than seeing this guy, he's quoted around £150-200, but then again i have no idea whether it's a good deal for what he's got.0 -
the bike i've been looking at today is saracen vortex-le, he's asking £165 for it which i understand is a great deal?
good bike?
suitable bike?
any comments?

Generally people who have thousands of bikes from police auctions, have large piles of scrap metal in their back garden.
Sounds a bit expensive - what year - they used to have V brakes?
I would take your time.I don't do smileys.

Forks look a bit skinny for serious jumping, bit dark to see anything else.I don't do smileys.
